Taking a Safety against MSU?

Sorry of this has been discussed - I did a quick search.
We took a safety at the very end, which was the obvious call. But I thought we should have taken one earlier...at the 4:00 minute mark when we were on the 10. We were up 6 and giving up 2 points still meant MSU needed a TD to win. But if you take a safety, you don't risk getting the punt blocked (or fumbling the snap) and more importantly, MSU probably gets the ball at the 30 instead of midfield. They would have needed a 70 yard TD drive instead of a short 50.
The only downside I see is that if MSU did score a TD, LSU would need a FG just to tie, instead of win. I don't think punting was a bad call, but I do think that taking a saftery may have been the better call. Thoughts?

more field position than worrying about the kick being blocked

Little bit too much time (4 min)on the clock to take a safety. But I would argue the better odds would have been to give Miss State the TD on first and goal from the 2. LSU would have been at worse 1 point down with 1:20 seconds left and two time outs starting somewhere between the 20 and 35 yd line.

IMO,
This is one of those situations where either time was appropriate.

Speaking of safeties, how about helton just kicking the bee-geezus out of the ball through the back of the end-zone on the bad snap instead of giving them the ball at the one.

I called for the safety at the 4:00 minute mark. However, I'm glad it played out the way it did.

With 4 minutes left MSU is not setting up a block, they are setting up a return and hoping for a short field with plenty of time for a TD.
With less than a minute left, MSU is putting on the block, which means a rushed kick, which could lead to a really short field. Plus, we were deeper in our own territory at that point.
Good call by Miles.

Why didn't we go for 2 when we scored our first offencive TD? We had 6 they had 7????

I agree with you and called for it when we eventually punted.
I see the possible downside of needing the FG for a tie, instead of a win, but I would have taken the safety, too.
I also was hoping we would have let them walk in from the 1 on 2nd down to reserve some time to come back, and we see how that turned out.
But, overall, our clock management has been about as reliable as our special teams coaching. We should consider donating our ST coach's salary to ACORN, it would be more productive there.
Punter recovers botched snap at the 1, and had already mishandled a prior snap on an extra point. You would think a mishandled snap might be fresh on his mind punting in front of his own goal line. He was lost.
We short kick on a sloppy field, when field position is at a premium.
We attempt a punt block with 3 minutes left in the half in a situation where we should go into halftime with the lead. We NEVER go for the block at any other time.
We field punts inside the 10.
In short, our six million dollars for this staff is not well spent, IMO. We could do worse, but for a lot less.
