Unfortunately, a ring is probably necessary as well, which I think is a silly criterium.

Why do you think considering whether a player ever won a championship is silly? I'm not saying some players should not be in b/c they never won a title (like Marino) but it's not silly.

because winning a championship isn't a qb stat.

its silly because you get assclowns like Ben Roth who have the worst superbowl ever as a qb but have a phenomenal supporting cast and get called 2 time superbowl winners.

because it requires 21 other players, not counting special teams, to win a super bowl. I have yet to see one man win any game in the NFL. this isn't tennis. I think it is extremely unfair to hold SB's as a necessary criterium to determine if a player is great or not. now I am not saying that it should not be considered at all, but it should be low on the list when deciding if a player is great and HOF worthy or not.

Payton Manning has won only one SB, but he has been the greatest QB the last 10 years. The reason they haven't won more than that is not due to his play, but rather due to a piss poor defense for most of his time in Indi. While he has played poorly at times, quite often it is due to his trying to make up for the defense's deficiencies.

Drew Brees has been unbelieveable the last 3 seasons for us, but does that make him any less of a QB for not winning a SB? Hell no! It's that he has not had a defense worth a damn these years, and it is necessary that every other player on a team contribute to the success of a team

Sure 2 players with equal stats and 1 has a couple of championships and the other doesn't, I understand the guy with the ring is better.

But if Brees has a few more superb years like he's had but doesn't win a Super Bowl, is Roethlisberger really better than him? Roethlisberger is 1 more SB away from being a sure fire HOFer.

THAT is WAY too much emphasis put on SB rings.
