The assumption by virtually everyone I've read is that our O was totally Vanilla vs. UW.

However, upon re-watching the game, JJ dropped back to pass, looking down field, on several occasions (including the one where he hit TT down the left side).

The other times, JJ either was sacked, scrambled for positive yards or threw the ball away.

This happened at least 5 times. That's 5 times we tried to go down field, about 10% of our plays.

Based on our success "trying to open it up" (or lack thereof), and considering our success last year throwing down field (to the other color jerseys), maybe Vanilla is a good flavor for us.

Finally, mega-thanks to JJ for taking the sack, doing the scramble and / or throwing it away. One bad decision / int by him could have altered the outcome of the game.

had the same conversation with a husky fan after the game

"if your QB would have thrown a couple of bad passes, we would have won!"

i laughed at his "if" statement, but it holds a lot of weight.

JJ = smart QB

The offense was very conservative, but probably for good reason. The Fact is JJ is still very young and the coaches are still trying to bring him along slowly. If JJ would have thrown a pick 6 during the first game, it would have seriously hurt the confidence of this offense. I think we will see more of an explosive offense in the next few games. Hopefully the offense will be peeking for the UGA and FL games.

I think JJ is smart in some ways. However, he needs to realize he is our starting qb and stop trying to run over everyone or we'll be depending on Lee by midseason.

The O line did not protect him well in obvious passing situations other than a few times. This is the reason for no long passes. TT took a mid range play and turned it into a long play with YAC.

Miles addressed this in the NC. LSU played it conservatively so that JJ would ease into the game. Nothing unusual. Most good programs know how to break in new QB's.
