Nah, Red comments on it a lot in his narration, everyone would know. Stephen King just kept it as a plot device, but it's just not how people behave.

Yeah, but he says in his narration that Andy never told anybody who was doing it to him. Also, in the narration, is Red looking back on events? It seems like he's remembering most of it. It doesn't seem like he shifts to present day until he "misses his friend," and is about to get paroled.
