I dont know if this is Germans... I apologize if so, but this is pretty telling. I want the BPA, if thats a RB thats cool. But if we take a RB over a guy that drops it would be a mistake.

"I'd have running back, a powerful runner, ahead of the other two,'' Payton said when asked how he'd rank draft needs at cornerback, wide receiver and running back.
Notice it says "when asked how he'd rank draft needs at cornerback, wide receiver and running back."
It didn't say anything about LB or S...
I wander if he would still pick running back over those 2 positions???

There's no safety at 14 to take.
The two USC linebackers would be there

i didnt mean to take at 14 necessarily.. payton didnt mention anything about trading down to get a player...all it says is that he would pick a RB over CB and WR... which there is not really a need at WR...so i can see why he would pick a RB over those 2..

The Saints released McAllister after last season and they haven't replaced him. But Payton has laid some of the groundwork for more consistency in the running game with his other offseason moves. The Saints brought in fullback Heath Evans, who can block and handle some carries out of the backfield and they quietly have collected a group of blocking tight ends to go with Jeremy Shockey.
IMO this is another reason why I think Payton will not draft a RB in the 1st round, and he's just smokscreening incase we get the chance to trade for more picks.
By adding a great blocking FB like Evans and another blocking TE in Dinkins...Payton can roll the dice on PT to see if he can be the featured RB behind his offense. Why waist 1st round money on Wells/Moreno to do something that PT, Bush, and Bell should do now that the offense has been geared better for the run game.
We need to trade down for more picks and draft an OLB or a S/CB in the first round and go after a RB in the fourth round or maybe in the 2nd or 3rd if we can get one.

From my reading of the Yasinskas blog I'd say he has good stuff 10%, Total off the wall crap 33% and the rest mixed bag or ho-hum.
This is from the same press table interview that was reported by T-P Triplett a couple of days ago. Listen how he described the same q&a conversation-
Payton said the safety position is still the Saints' top need, even after they signed veteran Darren Sharper last week. But he ranked a powerful running back and an outside linebacker as a tie for No. 2.
Payton did say, however, that they don't need to get a power runner in the draft. The Saints would also consider a veteran back if a good one gets released later in the summer. Or even if they don't add reinforcements, he has high hopes for both of the Saints' current young backups, Mike Bell and Lynell Hamilton.
Yaz doesn't mention any of this.
With much more detail given by Triplett and as a NOLA beat writer who can read Payton better I give his take more credit.
