batting .242 right now. At what point do you change some stuff around for a few games and let him sit out a little while? Or put him in the DH spot where he did better last year.
And don't give me the "it's baseball, people have slumps" cause it has been 20 games and he really hasn't been hot at all this year.

i'd say start something different tomorrow but thats me

I said the same thing tonight. Sit him for a game or two and let him clear his head. The replacement certainly can't swing it any worse...

I've been suggesting this recently. How long do you let someone just continue to stink? Sometimes guys "get it" when they sit out and think about it for a while (game or two). Clearly "letting him hit out of it" hasn't worked so far 1/3 of the way through the season.
I said earlier this week before the Tue/Wed games if he can't break out of his slump this week (5 games) and have a few solid games or one great game he should be benched for a little bit. He shouldn't be safe because of what he did in years not relevant to THIS year (seems a lot of people are giving him a pass because of what he did previously).
So far this week he is...
NWST: 1 for 3, 1 SO
MSU: 1 for 4
Game 1 USC: 0 for 3, 2 BB (We're down 7-3 in Top 9 with bases juiced, 2 outs...he's up and flies out to end game)
Week: 2 for 10, 1 SO, 2 BB...not good

this isnt a blake dean problem, this a team problem.

When your big guns dont hit, then no one will follow. If Deans not hitting, the team is struggling. When Dean is hitting, the team is rolling.

hitting isn't a team sport. Blake dean is up there alone. He isn't doing well. Neither are some other guys like Schimpf and Gibbs. Three guys we really expected a lot out of this year haven't come through at all

Blake Dean is easily the BIGGEST problem because he was easily the best returning power hitter with the highest average from last year as well. He hasn't hit for power or average this year at all. He has 2 HR in 20 games with a .242 average. He hit .353 last year.
HUGE difference.
Schimpf and Gibbs also need to snap out of it (they seem to be doing better) but Dean is easily the biggest dropoff overall.

Hitting is VERY contagious.

That would be a good subject for a PhD paper or something.
I think it seems to be contagious because when you face crappy pitchers everyone hits better, and when you face good pitching everyone hits worse.

Its not just Dean. We have 3-4 underachievers not getting the job done at the plate. Another great pitching performance wasted by a starter because we can't hit and our relievers can't hold down the other team.
But remember this is more or less the same team that was floundering and mediocre before the 23 game streak last year. It could be they are closer to being the team that performed so porly during the first half of last year than the one that went wild in the second half.
Baseball is a funny game but its not so funny that you can expect to win when only two players get hits in a game.

I think it's funny how coaches protect their big name players. I have heard during this "slump" Coach talking about how certain players are struggling and what they are doing wrong, but when he talks about Dean...it's never a problem it's hes the best hitter he's seen. He sits players...but never sits Dean. Moves the whole lineup around...but Dean. I find that crazy. He needs to sit Dean.

Just flip a coin every game until Deans starts hitting well again... tails, he sits out, heads, he plays.

the players from our number one baseball recruiting class are playing right now. Gibbs is catching, Landry is in CF, Lemahieu is at SS, Ranaudo is our friday guy, Clark and Vedugo have since moved on to the pros.
Our freshman class this season was not the recruiting class that was ranked number one, and actually according to Baseball America, it wasn't even top 25.
