Most Defining Moment In LSU Sports History?

We were talking about this last night at work, here is what we came up with.
Can you think of anymore, or what you think is the most important?
These are not in any order:
1. 2 football NC's in four years
2. 5 baseball NC's in ten years
3. 12 consecutive Track & Field NC's
4. Maravich's record breakers
5. W. Morris walk off home run
6. 58 team goes from unranked to NC's
7. Three Platoon system & Wing T (ties in with #6)
8. Billy Cannon's 59 punt return vs Ole Miss
9. 1st #9 seed basketball team to make Final Four
10. LSU is only Triple Double SEC Champs (not sure if true, guy at work said it)
11. Earthquake Game
12. Blue Grass Miracle
13. 2008 baseball 23-game win streak
Any others?
If I was to guess, I would say #10 is the most defining moment (if true), than a tie between W. Morris and '58 unranked team.

Yeah I'd have to add the 1st victory over a #1 team in Tiger Stadium in 97.
I'd also have to add Josh Reed's 2001 season because probably no SEC WR will do what he did again.

I voted for this because it really was a "MOMENT".

Not to be a typo-narc - but it was 89 yds.
At the time, it was commonly referred to as 87 yds, but for decades, I have seen it referred to as 89 yards = they must have re-looked at the film and calibrated the spot more accurately.

-the inception of TAF allows LSU to have the facilities it has today, thus the recruits, thus the success
-the hiring of Dinardo combined with the signing of Kevin Faulk turned LSU's football program around
-hiring of saban- who brought LSU's program (enabled by TAF) to current status

Beating Iowa on the road in the first round of the 2002 NIT.

We were an 11 seed in 1986 and therefore the first 11 seed to make the Final Four.
The Elite 8 win in 1986 and Sweet 16 upset of #1 seed Duke in 2006,both in Atlanta need consideration. Superb wins, which I'm thrilled to say I was there to see.

I'm pretty sure you don't know the definition of the word "moment"

quote:These aren't "moments", they are multiple titles. You would have to pick one of them in order for it to be a 'moment'. That said, the SECCG victory over Tennessee in 2001 was for me the defining moment in LSU sports history, the moment that the football program officially turned the corner, became less regionalized, and was considered a true contender for titles (SEC and National) on a regular basis.

For me...
Skylar Green's catch to seal the deal against Georgia. That moment put LSU football (which is king in college sports) back in the lime light of college football, and hopefully proves to be the moment that put our football team on track for many years to come.

quote:Really the only choice, imo. LSU football became a different animal in that era, most singularly due to the efforts of Billy Cannon. And obviously that play was the defining moment of Cannon's LSU career. There is a reason that one play -- grainy, shitty-quality old black and white footage and all -- is still shown more often than any other moment in LSU sports history.
8. Billy Cannon's 59 punt return vs Ole Miss

Hiring Bob Broadhead as Atheletic Director turned LSU into a national power house in sports (track, football, baseball, etc)

quote:This gets my vote. The NC was snatched from the jaws of defeat by a guy who missed most of the season with an injury.
5. W. Morris walk off home run

This moment embodies LSU excellence in athletic performance, as well as fan involvement. Everybody knows about it, too; therefore, people remember how avid of fans LSU fans are.

If so then it would have to be this...

And, yes, it is true.

For football, I'd say it was Rohan Davey coming in and lighting up Georgia Tech in the second half of the 2001 peach bowl. From that time on, it's gotten better and better.

Well, your list contains several entries that don't qualify as "moments".
Nonetheless, I'd have to say that since football drives everything else at the LSU Athletic Department, and since you can pretty much draw a demarcation line in LSU football between "before Saban" and "after Saban", with all due respect to everyone who came before Saban arrived, I'd have to say that the most defining moment in LSU sports history was the moment that Saban became LSU's head football coach.

1st #9 seed basketball team to make Final Four
Actually we made it to the Final Four as a number 11 seed in 1986
