Nice post, OP.
Having lived in New Orleans for 20 years, Morgantown for 2 years, a suburb of Washington D.C. for 2 years, and now Louisville, KY, I can assure you Morgantown is no dump. The stadium is excellent (for Big East standards) and shares a parking lot with the state's largest state of the art hospital. The city has expanded a lot in the past 5 years and has opened many new restaurants, especially near the stadium.
Being a native Louisianian, moving to Morgantown was a bit of a culture and geographic shock, but the place is gorgeous in the fall and the girls in the fall aren't bad either. WV gets a bad rap, but having been a resident of LA, WV, VA, and KY, I can honestly say there's not that much difference between them. I thought I would miss LA much more than I have, and I doubt my family and I will ever move back, even though we swore we would when I was finished with school.

It's sad that so many fans enjoy trying to look down their noses at the opponents fans. Why?
Insecurity and an easy target. Truth is, Mountaineer fans may even be more rabid about their team than LSU fans. After all, there isn't much sports-wise in WV except for WVU and Marshall.

about the only thing you could miss in La. is the food, the state is an eyesore, and I'm from there. Moutaineer stadium is a topnotch stadium.

It's not that bad.
My daugher plays percussion in the WVU band.
I've been there at least 30 times or so.
First, people are dead on about the loyalty to their school. The town revolves around them, are nuts for WVU. They are going to be passionate, much more than the VT fans. They are very rowdy.
They WILL try and take over the place. Many will
actually thnk they can. It could get reaalllll
ugly for them.
I expect quite a few fights. Happens all the time when they go to Pitt. Over 100 WVU-Pitt fans were ejected last year during that game, mostly WVU fans.
While downtown Morgantown isn't the greatest place in the world,(they do burn couches)there
are some things that make me like it.
Firstly, you have to speak English. Period. Non Americans simply not welcomed, nor desired.
Since there is so little growth banks aren't foreclosing, and the crime is pretty non-existant as well.
The town is actually clean, but a very old town.
Things are damn cheap- cheaper than La. Way cheaper than VA or NC.
The Cheat Lake area, about 6 miles away, is a great spot for water sports. The golf at Lakeview Resort is pretty decent. There is great whitewater, better than GA or NC perhaps the best East of the Mississippi, about an hour away.
Summers are incredible, usually low 80s for
highs. Sun is up well past 9 PM in June/July. Lots of late golf can be played.
The fall colors, if you like it (or if you need to kiss you're wife's arse)are also incredible.
Can't get around winter too much. It sucks.
The town can get pretty nasty cold and windy, and the snow flies from mid November until late March.
Football games are fun, the stadium looks like
East Jefferson but seats about 60K. I went to the WVU-UCF game in whitout conditions, the fans throw snowballs at the other teams' coaches. And funniest of all...they usually bomb the mascot and the cheerleaders.
My last visit in December was hilarious, snowed all weekend. Went to see my daughter and the WVU-UCF game.
Picture this: the UCF cheeeleaders....blonde, huge boobs, deep tan, pearly white teeth..wearing a short cheerleading skirt...
freezing their arse off.... noses running, buggers everywhere, lips frostburned...red aced...huddled all together with their backs to the wind.
I asked one of them if they ever cheerleaded in snow.
She replied... " i've never seen snow before"
And yep, they got screwed and lost.

What exactly is the story behind this? Don't they do it when they win? You'd think they'd be more inclined to destroy property if they lost. I don't get the enjoyment behind burning living room furniture.

I can't wait...WVU fans are crazy and morganhole is a crazy college town.
In addition to the whitewater, try a couple of other things during your visit if you have the opportunity:
1. find somebody to get you some good WV shine...so smooth you can sip it all nite...don't need to chase it.
2. try mountainbiking if you are up for a thrill.

Yeah if you like Goofy Golf, Go Karts and outlet mall shopping. I would take undeveloped Morgantown mountains over Sevier County TN any day of the week

It's a bit out of the way, but Harper's Ferry is one of the most interesting places I've ever seen.

Ive always admired there stadium and atmosphere on the tv. I have always wanted to play West Va at there place. I will make this trip. I like there fan base even with their warts. I actually kind of pull for their team and I am not sure why. I think the football atmosphere with the Tiger Nation in town will be incredible. I went to the VA Tech game and their stadium was loud. I expect W. Va to be louder.
All of the above is contingent on that part of the state having some good fly fishing. If there is no near by flyfishing, then the place sucks and I am not going.

Both my parents are WVU grads, so I have long considered them my "3rd Team" behind LSU (hometown fave) and TCU ('96 grad)...
Your post is quite accurate.
I also agree with the guy that said WVU fans have a respect for SEC football and LSU in particular. While they never had the legacy of football glory that LSU enjoyed - WVU football's ups and downs seemed to come into alignment with LSU starting in the late80s/early 90s... Talent but no coaching, coaching but no talent, a rise to "national power" status... Hell, they even have their own Saban...
I think both fan bases will walk away from this series feeling like they have brethren on the other side of the Mason-Dixon line (OK - I know it's about 10 miles north of Morgantown, but you get the point).
I can't wait to see these games.
EDIT:
Hands down a cross between Alexandria and pre-casino Bossier.

Yes, burning couches usually happends after they beat Pitt, or win a huge game. Or they are freezing their asses off.
Which happens a lot.
Which happens a lot.
