Hormel, trust me on this.

dump the whole can in a non-stick skillet
unroll the wax paper and discard
simmer on a low-medium heat until sauce from can thickens/reduces to almost nothing
carefully roll tamales during process being careful not to break them
once they get a light brown tint cover with finely graded cheese and allow to melt
plate them,
add about half a can of refried beans to the skillet
add a little water or canned enchillada sause and stir
this will make the beans smooth
as soon as they are hot plate them next to the tamales and ENJOY season to taste
Best cheap/quick mexican meal you will ever eat.

Out here in CA, tamales are very different from those back home - thicker with coarser masa covering and a variety of fillings (even sweet ones). Used to get good tamales from Solly's back in Vicksburg the way I like them - thin and spicy with finely ground masa and minced beef filling.

Go to Denham and get some from Cantu's. It's worth the drive.

Pimanyoli's. And I live in Denham and have had Cantu's. They are good, but I prefer Pimanyoli's -- they are smaller and spicier with less masa. Doe's are also good.

to bring home or at a restaurant? If to bring home, Callandros sells these awesome beef ones from Houma!

I like cantu's filling but they just can't seem to get the masa right..had some about 3 weeks ago and I swear there was even more masa...Pimanyoli's has a good filling and a thin layer of masa just the way I like it...so if I could get Cantu's to put their filling inside Pimanyoli's masa...eutopia

Until then I have to go with Pimanyoli's

You mean they are actual tamales instead of this mutant form served with gravy that people enjoy in the South?

No gravy....some may top with chili

You just wait, with the influx of Hispanic population...Louisiana will be an oasis for mexican food.
