and as much as I like the guy, maybe giving him a long term contract.

I really like this Atogwe guy out of St Louis, and it's easier to find capable MLBs than capable FS. Loomis has said that we don't have much money to spend given upcoming contracts over the next few years, but signing Vilma has pretty much been a given.

Whats say we franchise Vilma, give the money we were going to give him to Atogwe, then try to get Curry in the draft. If we get him, we can play him at WLB for a year and have a great LB corps, then if we can't keep Vilma next offseason, we can consider moving Curry to the middle of go after an MLB in the draft.

If we DON'T get Curry, we can focus on one of the positions of the players we're worried about extending soon (worried about losing Brown, go LT, Evans go G, etc...). Develop that player or even let them start if good enough, then when the vet's contract comes up, we let that player go in FA. The money saved in letting them walk in favor of the relatively cheap draft pick would free up some cash that could be used towards keeping Vilma around.

Biggest downsides I can think of is if the draft player is a bust (but that's a risk you have to take, can't build a good team solely around FA) and pissing Vilma off using a franchise tag.

Of course they could always give both Vilma and Atogwe long term contracts with the intent of letting a Brown or an Evans walk soon, avoiding the franchise situation with Vilma.

We can't franchise Vilma before FA begins. If I were him, I would take a walk before waiting till FA begins then signing a Franchise tag type deal.

We don't want that.

I hear what you are saying but
-It has never been made clear whether we can franchise Vilma per terms of the trade
-from all indications they have a wink 'n nod agreement to be signed at 12:01 when FA starts
-Curry has been moving up on draft boards, some have him top 5 so him being available at all at 14 is hopeful at best. He is a beast btw
-no other OLB warrants at #14 pick

I like Antogwe but dunno if he will garner a break the bank contract. Maybe not, if so, having both no prob.
Jermaine Phillips is another viable option that should be much less spendy cuz of his age.

Heaven forbid no Vilma but there are Maualuga, Laurinaitis, Beckwith etc avaialable draftwise

see what I came up with FA/draftwise-
Ideal FA/Draft scenarios

The Saints seem to have had problems with finding either lately. We know how big Vilma can be to the defense, it is uncertain how much Atogwe would help. I remember people having high hopes for KK. A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush.

Then we'd be paying Vilma the average of the top 5 linebackers. It's hard to say with how we overpaid Grant and Smith, but I hope they sign him for less than that.

Didn't know about losing the first rounder if they franchise him.

I still like the idea of getting both. Jamaal Brown has 3 years left on his contract, but he'll (rightfully so) get a new deal or almost definitely hold out next season. I like him, but I don't know if he's QUITE Pro Bowl caliber, and he's getting up in age with knee problems. I think if we deal him and avoid that $7m+ per season he would get, we can afford Vilma, Atogwe, and two of three between PT, Evans and Moore. Maybe even all 5 with Deuce's contract gone.

Vilma is amazing and does not deserve a long term contract only because it would be a shame to see him waste his talent in New Orleans with a "makeshift" franchise

You don't lose a first round pick if you franchise one of your own players.

no shite, but franchising him is giving him a 1 year contract which would send our 1st round pick away because of the Shockey and Vilma trade

Franchised players need to be designated by the 21st of Feb. Which is roughly 10 days before FA. Even if Vilma did not actually sign on the dotted line until say March 10th, he was tendered on 2/21/09 (or would be if we franchised him) making him exclusive to us on that date and not allowed to hit the open market for negotiations with all 32 teams. That would escalate his deal to a 2nd and Shockey's to a 1st.

EDIT: Deadline is 2/26/09 this year.
