Easy to say, but in reality those kids who do play on travel teams aren't totally wasting their $$$. In most cases they do get better instruction and gain valuable game experience which gives them a competitive advantage.

paying money for this advanced instruction before puberty is insane. you don't need it before then

but it's hard to deny it doesn't increase their chances of success.

doing anything before puberty doesn't really increase or decrease a chance of success

genetics and puberty mean about 10,000% more than any instruction at 8-9 years old

don't think it's that bad. Especially for soccer, volleyball and golf.

That obviously depends on what high school the kid plans on attending. My guess is it applies to all those sports where the HS is consistantly one of the tops in that particular sport on the HS level.

This is 100% wrong IMO. Teaching kids the proper fundamentals from a young age makes all the difference in the world. Not because its gonna make the kid become a MLB player, but if a kid is a stud in Little League its going to boost his confidence and most likely make him very popular at school. I cant tell you how many shy, nerdy kids I have seen come in at 6 or 7 years old and start taking lessons and within a year or two they are confident and popular...its an awesome thing to see.

I did too, but things have changed and this is what the thread is all about.

And it's not just sports. Take LSU for example. Back in my day anyone who wanted to attend LSU could, but now it's alot more competitive.

but going to a shitty high school doesn't matter when applying if you're good enough (namely ACT)

Again easy to say, but in reality those kids who do attend the better schools aren't totally wasting their $$$. Agreed?

JJ27 your nephew is on a great team . I have seen them play and they play hard and show a lot of class. My son's team played the La . Tunder in last year's (North) State Championship. There are a few U-trip teams in the state that are together for the right reasons. I think the La. Tunder and my son's team are two of them. Last year we played 35 games and won the U9 North State title.

my guess is your child wasn't quite the athlete his friends were or you hoped. Tournament baseball is what you want it to be. You can play with your friends and play AA level, mix and match and play AAA or try to pay for play with Marucci, McClures, Tractions, etc at play against Major level...or you can play strictly league ball during the week.

Our family enjoys weekend tournaments. While our sons play 2-3 weekends a month, the family doesn't have to make them all but we make 90% because we enjoy the friendships and enjoy watching our son play baseball.

I have friends with 9 year olds looking for a team this year, if anyone has suggestions, please let me know

These tournaments are some of the best memories from my childhood and I guarantee my teammates feel the same way. The kids from my middle school teams are still some of my best friends in college right now and we loved playing together.

So true. As well as my soccer teams growing up. What happened to league teams going to play 5 or 6 tournaments?

I think that people that feel tournament ball is a negative thing are missing the boat. I have 3 boys playing and its not because I think they are future major leaguers. They enjoy the game and I want them challenged. I feel they get more from the experience by playing with and against kids of similar skill. I would rather them be challenged than to just be dominant in a league of lesser skilled kids. Just because a kid is a great 9 yo player, doesn't mean he will even make his high school team and just because a 9 y/o sucks doesn't mean he will not be good as he gets older. I do know that my 13y/o has had experiences in travel ball that he will cherish for the rest of his life. He has also made friends with kids all over the country through competition.

question

with baseball essentially dominating 6-8 months of the year, do your kids play any other sports?

namely basketball and football

they have never played fall baseball. They play football and my 9y/o plays basketball.

I guess the I want responses are a way to say that it is me more than my kids. I suggested to my oldest that he take this year off from tournament ball and use the time to work out getting ready for high school. He absolutely would have killed to play his last year of tournament ball. Actually if it were only me, my life would be much easier if they didn't play on weekends but I am not going to keep my boys from doing something they love just so I can sleep in on Saturdays.

yall have no idea about travel ball ....ive coached travel ball for last 10 yrs. although many teams charge a great fee (becareful because the high fees pays for ALL coaches expenses). My team charges 250 a year (includes 3 sets of uniforms, travel tee and sweat, and a batbag). the parents have to pay their own personal expense (hotel, food, gas) we play 7-8 tournaments in summer and 2-3 in fall and some of them are drivable home distance (inside 100 miles to eliminate hotel) now we do go to big tournament (national and exposure tournaments)...its not every weekend but be carefull like i said the high fee teams are paying for ALL coaches expenses. and btw we are a highly successful team ...numerous state titles and tournament wins and consistantly placing in the top 10 in national tournaments that have 75+ teams in them. and one more thing most travel teams only take 10-11 kids so that they all play every game. we just take 10. One more thing....people have are mislead about college also ...there are numerous college scholarships available in athletics at all levels. We just came back from an exposure tournament in dallas where there were over 200 collage coaches (all sec,big 10, big 12 coaches were there)there were also the smaller college coaches there also. if your kid wants to play college ball there is a place for him you just have to look

you think so? I taught my girls at 6 to bat left and right handed because at that age they did not know how to swing a bat much less which hand to use...now at 13-14 they can ALL switch hit and lay a bunt or slap hit down where ever they want to. If i had waited untill the age u say it would be almost impossible for them to learn that
