Obscure NFL Rule

Perhaps the most bizarre rule involves a novel way to convert the extra point after a touchdown. Let’s say the holder bobbles the snap and the ball is rolling around, and then a defensive player intentionally kicks or knocks it out of his own end zone.
Read an article on Yahoo about bizarre NFL rules and had heard of most of them, however this one was a new on me. Has anyone heard of this? Witnessed it at some level?

Yeah, 1-point conversion or 1-point safety.

So basically the defender has to get back there and kick it towards the goal? Can they throw it or use their arms in any way?

A&M didn't kick it out of the end zone...it was a bad snap by UT I think...they tried for 2 and fumbled or something, an A&M guy recovered, but was tackled in the end zone. But I believe he recovered at the 1.

Yeah, he recovered it at the 1 and ran it into his own endzone and was tackled.

In college, I think there's another way to get a 1 point safety. If Team A is kicking an extra point/going for two, and somehow, they run all the way back to their own endzone and are tackled in their own endzone, it's 1 point for Team A. And, of course, they have to kick off. I think in the NFL, it's 2 points for that.

What about the free kick rule. How does that work?

It's virtually impossible to have happen, unless you're trying to do it. You'd basically have to run backwards 97 yards.
Although, I think another way it could happen is if you throw an INT on the two point, they run it all the way back, but fumble it around the 1, you pick it up, and then run into your end zone and are tackled. That's the only way I could see it happening.

free kick
But the same rules apply: if you miss it, the other team gets it right there.
It's rare and would only happen with like 1 second left in a half.

buckeye, i dont think you are correct, by what you are saying a team can get a pt by simply running all the way back to their endzone and kneeling

No, the OTHER team gets a point if that happens.
It's the only way a team can end up with a final score of 1 point in college.
