Ok this peaks my interest. Any pointers on where to start with the Dolomites? Specific towns, where to fly to, highlights, etc?

I’d fly into Venice and decompress there for a day or so. The Dolomites are due north and are spectacular. A good place to base there is Cortina d’ Ampezzo. It’s central. You’ll need a car to get around because, well, mountains. There are tons of hiking trails.
Alternatively you could fly into Milan and hit Lake Como or Lake Garda first. The train system is excellent so you could train from Milan to Venice. There are a lot of options.
