If you were going to introduce someone to metal for the first time, what five albums would you have them listen to?

Metallica - Master of Puppets
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Judas Priest - Painkiller
Iron Maiden - Powerslave
Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power

After debating myself for awhile and making changes numerous times, this is my final answer.

Nice.

I had Number of the Beast. I changed it to Powerslave. I also had Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying? and changed it to Painkiller.

I love Iowa, but for a first time metal listener, it's not very digestible.

You have to throw at least one Death album in there. Maybe Sound of Perseverance.

SOP or Leprosy by Death for sure.

LOG - Ashes of the Wake
Priest - British Steel or Screaming.
Maiden - any of the first five, POM is a banger too.
Sabbath - could go with Masters, Mob Rules, Paranoid, or Sabatoge.

I'd try to pull from different genres.

Black Sabbath - Master of Reality
Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny
Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Korn - Korn

If I could add a 6th album.... Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime

Scorpions-Taken By Force (really into this album right now; easily their best)
Black Sabbath-Paranoid (greatest metal album of all time)
Judas Priest-Stained Class
Iron Maiden-The Number of the Beast
Rush-Moving Pictures

I’ve never been what you could call a
metal head, and the definition of “metal” seems fluid to me.
True confession: when Black Sabbath arrived, my friends and I thought they were fun, but we didn’t take them seriously.

I mean, you nailed this list. Personally I would swap out Ride The Lightning for MoP, but otherwise this is the best of the best. Painkiller is incredibly underrated, but that might be the best metal album ever constructed. The riffs, the drums... shite, everything about it is perfection.

Vulgar Display of Power - Pantera
Ride the Lightning - Metallica
Iowa - Slipknot
Paranoid - Black Sabbath
- Bring Me the Horizon

I feel like this would give a fledgling metal fan a solid foundation for some of the most important subgenres of metal. It would serve as sorta a timeline for how metal developed. Not every subgenre is going to be loved by everyone, but if one has any natural predisposition towards metal, they’re probably going to love at least one of these albums. If they like that, I know exactly what to feed them.

I would give them the Black album over MoP for a first timer. I'd also probably take Judas Priest out for something more modern like Mastodon.

Feels necessary to include Metallica, Maiden, and Priest
I guess those three plus two maybe more modern bands like Pantera/Lamb of God/Killswitch/Trivium
Also get including Black Sabbath, but I personally wouldn't

Love the Painkiller suggestion - my personal favorite Priest album is Screaming for Vengeance but it's definitely not as "metal" as Painkiller

I tried to go with a history of metal approach and those are all basically the same era. You have to include Pantera because the top metal band of the 90s. Its hard to narrow down all those bands and still leave room for something more modern.

Glad I'm not the only that recognizes the impact this album made.

Lots of great classic albums here for sure. But to me, when this kind of question is asked I always want to know - where are they coming FROM? If you're introducing a youngster who's mostly listened to hip hop, your choices could be pretty different than introducing someone who is coming from classic rock, or from something further away.

SO for the hip hop direction (which I'm not at all very conversant with, for the record), I'd think of things with funk/groove or outright rap / hip hop elements like...

Infectious Grooves - Sarsippius' Ark
Faith No More - Epic
White Zombie - La Sexorcisto
Kyuss - Blues For the Red Sun
Korn maybe?
