Do scholarships even matter anymore?

I'm just thinking about the investigation at Michigan and sanctions against Florida State and thinking we should be on top now because we dont have those issues, but does it even matter? With NIL, they can just pay the kids an extra +$ whatever to cover the cost of a scholarship... so in theory, you have as many scholarships as money you can fork out now.

Athletic Scholarships still matter

Being a scholarship football player comes with all sorts of perks…those departments/staffs are limited.
But yea, Ole Miss’ kicker last year was on ‘full NIL’ while the scholarship kid sat the bench.
Coaches equate ‘full NIL’ with scholarships, but I still think you’d rather be a scholarship football player.

Hunter Dean was a walk on this past season even though everyone assumed he was on scholarship. Pretty sure he got covered through NIL

Yes.
NIL is taxable. No elite player is trading money for a full scholarship.
You might could get a preferred walk-on to come with some NIL.

They sure as hell do for non-P5 football and basketball players who are mostly backups, as it helps them afford a college education if they take care of their academic business. It also matters for vast majority of non-revenue sport athletes, majors and mid-majors alike, for the same exact reason.
