Birmingham proper is pretty ghetto. They just have some very nice suburbs. Downtown is decent too, but last time I was there (4-5 months ago) it was overrun with homeless people and Chargers peeling out.

Surprisingly, there are some fantastic neighborhoods in the city, too. Forest Park, Altamont, Redmont Park, etc., are very wealthy enclaves within the city. Unfortunately, if you live there you have to send your kids to private school.
