why does this comparison keep being made? They are not the same for a couple of reasons.

1. recruiting coker did not recruit near as well as miles is.

2. the way miles is handling the staff changes at this time is nothing but respectful as opposed to firing the whole coaching staff after 1 game

bombs away!!!!!!!!!!!

At least Miles has a track record of hiring proven assistants. He hired Gundy at OSU and now he's an up and coming head coach there.
He went out and got Pelini. He replaced Fisher with little to no dropoff even with a new QB.
Changes are coming this year when the defense failed miserably. I don't think any QB coach or offensive guru would've helped the QB play this year.

3. LSU was nowhere near the same level of program in 2005 when Miles took over that Miami was when Coker took over.

Because this is the rant and LSU has more than it's share of rantards as well as TD.com being infiltrated by inbred gumps posing as retarded LSU fans.

Everyone that posted is right on the money.Coker won the nc the year after Davis left.Saban has been gone for 3 years prior to Miles winning the nc.

He had some Saban recruits, but he took those recruits and molded them into champions. He made Hester a hybrid rb,offered Trindon a scholly when only SMiss and Southern offered. The comparisons stop at how many rings each of them won, that's it.Saban still doesn't have a better win percentage than Miles at LSU,and Saban had his own guys to coach.

Coker's demise came when Miami moved into the ACC. There program has been in the shitter ever since they moved out of the creme puff Big East.

Miami got a lot of mileage out of being in the Big East. They only had like one big game a year - Fla St at the time out of conference

Yeah, I also don't think Miami had the conference schedule that LSU has.

11-2, 11-2, 11-2, and 7-5 is an eerily similar pattern to Coker's, but only time, recruiting, and Miles coaching hires will tell if it is legit

I don't slam Miles or Coker (Coker was 60-15 at Miami - they should be so lucky). However, your statement puzzles me. Do you think that LSU at the end of 2004 was nowhere near the level of Miami(FL) when Coker took over, or just that LSU had not been at the top level for as long?

(BTW, I like Butch Davis, too.)

Why? LSU only had two seasons of less than 3 losses in the previous fifteen years when Miles took over. Miami was a juggernaut that had won 4 national titles in the previous 17 seasons when Coker took over and was widely known as the premier school for NFL talent in the country.

He also inherited a team that had gone 11-1 the year before and should have been in the national title game and was ranked #2 to end the year.

LSU had only had one really good year where they put it all together, and still didn't even go undefeated, and was coming off of a 3 loss season.

And Coker also wasn't coaching in the SEC, a much tougher conference than either the ACC or Big East.

There simply isn't a comparison. There is no question that Miles has continued to build LSU's program up to higher a level than it was when he arrived.

Maybe you should check the NFL draft records for UM before you stick your neck out. Coker recruits were still getting drafted early the lAst time I checked and they are making NFL team rosters. Talent was not the problem. In the LSU vs Miami game there were nine Hurricane players drafted that season and all made an NFL roster the following season. Five LSU players were drafted that year and not all made an NFL roster

Which is yet another point that proves that the Miles and Coker comparisons aren't valid.

The two actually coached against each other head to head in a bowl game with a month to prepare and Miles' team blew the doors off of an arguably more talented Miami team.

I guess a sceptic would say that Miles' 2005 team was in year 1 away from Daddy, while Coker's team that year was in Year 5.

However,it ceratinly looks like Miles' 5th year team would have also pasted the team Coker brought to Atlanta that night as well.

It's not made because of similar situations, but the majority of people make the comparison in response to the crowd that says "well Les won a NC, Have a GREAT day!" and shite like that. Winning a national title doesn't always mean you're a great coach.

However, this is the major difference:

Coker won it all in his 1st year, whereas Les won it in his 3rd. Les is a better coach.

LSU has NEVER and will NEVER have a team as talented as the one Coker coached to a NC
