Is this where the public funds private schools?

Just wait until you see refundable child care credits, you'll lose your mind.

Realistically I wish there was a solution for public schools to be more answerable to parents and better run, but I'm not sure this is the way to obtain that. In a world where kids cannot be left behind, a system always has to cater to the lowest common denominator. As a kid who went through some of that, it just shreds the upper level students. Nobody gave a shite if I was intellectually stimulated, they cared that the knuckle draggers and hooligans managed to scrape enough together to go to the next grade.

End of the day, if the parents don't give a shite, chances are the kid is going to be a menace. If the parents do give a shite, chances are the kid will be at least below average.

My only question is does this open private schools up to government rules? I would think not since the funds are not directly given to the schools.

I guess the devil is in the details here. Since the money is not given directly to the schools, I would say no...

But... perhaps the state sets up rules that limit what the money can be used for. Does the state say that the money can only be used for a private school that administers the XYZ test? To a private school that has a non-discrimination policy? Etc?

There are ways you could limit it. Or not limit it.

Can’t put lipstick on a pig. Quality schools are due to involved parenting and holding their kids and teachers accountable. The good schools will fall.

Most private schools require more committment (financial and involvement) than public schools do. The crappy parents that have a lack of involvement that is ruining public schools, I doubt they are going to take this money and move their kid to a private school that requires more involvement.

I think its a “whitey” thing disguised as an educational opportunity. Ya know since whitey has been left out of all those other educational opportunities

So, if you choose to send your child to public school, does that school district get cut a check from the account automatically?

Also, trying to understand this statement:

"Creates an opportunity for the best and highest rated public school districts in
Louisiana to stem the continued excess migration into those top school districts.
Excessive migration into top rated public school districts create school overcrowding
and overdevelop of homes that inevitably result in traffic congestion, increased
drainage problems, and the flooding of homes and businesses."

I didn't grow up in Louisiana; I'm from the MS Gulf Coast and had a good k-12 public school system. Is this bill trying to funnel more kids into private or charter schools instead of families trying to live in good public school districts?

Edit is this cheese program the same or in addition to the private school voucher program?

The current limited-use voucher program would be rolled into this new program, it appears. Considering the income limitations for the current vouchers, it would likely be about the same amount for those students.

520 million a year in new state spending.

Who needs Democrats when you have populist Republicans?

From what I have read, attendance at a public school makes that child ineligible for this account.

A kid attenidng public results in no difference from what is happening today, where the state sends the school an amount of money per public school student (the MFP)

Whoa. Yeah, that's exactly what it seems like.

Overcrowding CAN be an issue in successful high growth districts, but there are PLENTY of ways to deal with that. One of them is to build new schools paid for with the property tax dollars from all those new homes.

Also, for this statement to really be "true" it would need to be coming from the public school leaders. However, the public school leaders are blasting this plan.

I’m not sure what school choice would do other than screw up any remaining public schools. When I was in elementary school, the public schools were good. At least the 2 I attended in BR. Judge Parker ruined BR. Educators need to get back to educating. Not worrying about social issues. And if a kid is punished at school, the parents punish at home and whoop they’re a$$. No good school left deserves to be ruined.

Yes. There are a few counts during the year, and the state cuts a check based on the number you verify

This is the admission that all public schools will soon becpme unattendable. Takem your rax money and run

Federal judges ruined ALL public schools. And that they are out of the business, DEI has taken over from the judges

Thanks for the response. That makes sense.

That's a bit disturbing; they are saying there's a fire, which may be true, but the good districts may be ready to handle it.

Does that mean that a kid can choose to go to whatever school the parents like, regardless of location? That sort of puts the parish school boards under some pressure. I honestly think that this is at least partly because the state provides most funding for public schools and have little real control on how the schools are run.

What would be very interesting would be to allow kids who live in, say, Jefferson parish, to attend public schools in, say, St. Charles parish.

Right now, that can be done under certain circumstances but they are very limited. If that was allowed for everyone, that would be an interesting version of "school choice".

My children do not go to public schools. I pay out my fricking arse for all 3 of them to go to Catholic private schools.

Does this mean that the state is going to pay for my kids' private school tuition?

Because I don't understand what this law is and I feel that's by design.

I always thought this was a stupid policy. Why on earth would anyone want the democrats to come to private schools? They’ve already completely ruined public schools. Everything they touch turns into a blighted shell of what it once was.

But, remember, anytime the government subsidizes something, the cost goes up.

I'm going to bookmark this post to use against you forever.

So, end student loan subsidies? EV subsidies?

Remember, kids are put in private schools, because the money the state spends on facilities, teachers, etc., is not effectively spent. School choice bills are a result of public school districts. On the plus side, you could probably start closing schools and firing teachers due to decreased enrollment. Oh, yeah, that'll happen.
