It’s got too much attention already to not run it. And that’s what they want more than anything-attention. Probably just last minute editing making sure Mulkey won’t sue them into oblivion. If they blast her dishonestly, she could claim damages to her career and recruiting and become a big payday.

My wild arse guess is that this story is probably not spiked but some legal at the Post has definitely hit pause. The soft leak of the story's concept and the time-pressure request for comment usually indicates the story is going live very soon.

The claim that sources were misled is troubling. I'm sure that's a new wrinkle that didn't come up when the story was vetted internally (assuming it ever was vetted, sadly).

Every day that goes by with no story published is bad for the Post. They kicked the tires, but they ain't lighting the fires, and there is a reason.
