First of all, this is a conversation that need not involve Will Wade. Many look admirably in his tenure, and for good reason, but he’s gone and he isn’t coming back.

That said let’s have an honest conversation about the basketball program. MM is not an SEC caliber coach and that begins with recruiting. He has pulled in very little with an elite college brand and above average basketball brand. Basically his best gets are transfers that were loyalist from Murray St and in state kids no other SEC school would have spent a scholarship on. His HS signees are are developmental guys that show average SEC starter potential. If we cannot get elite talent we will not be a consistently competitive SEC team. I believe he is a good floor coach and gets a good bit from his talent, but that will serve him much better in a mid major coaching role. In the end college basketball is about amassing talent and I don’t see a world where MM flips that switch if he hasn’t already at LSU.

Also the people who defend him just to spite the WW sycophants, you are defending a coach who just lost home games to Nicholls and North Texas and had to battle to come back against a few other less than worthy teams in the same floor. In what other sport would any Tiger fan support that level of mediocrity. Just because you acknowledge the guy isn’t right for the job doesn’t mean you are praising the former coach.

I honestly believe it would serve us best to cut ties and go after a new basketball coach, but it won’t happen this year. I say this thinking 2023-24 has been much closer to a ceiling for MM than the floor.

I’d be much more encouraged had we signed a top 15 class and a couple of transfers, but now we’re going to have to somehow sign 7 damn good transfers that don’t all have Louisiana ties (what all of McMahon’s transfers had).

Correct, aside from the fundamental problems.. bad defense, limited offense, turnovers, bad situational coaching, free throws, McMahon just doesn’t have many tricks in his bag. We have no change up on offense or defense, no pressure D, no zone and on offense he’s behind the curve in terms of what successful college offenses are doing. He’s a mid major coach, someone who can coach one specific area well but doesn’t have enough in his arsenal to compete in the big conferences.

You do realize UNT was better than 6 other SEC teams this year right? Everyone agrees the Nicholls loss was bad, but it’s silly to group these two together.

It’s hard to say after year two. There were good & bad moments this year. He’s got next year to improve or he’s gone

I've seen some good but I've also seen a good bit of WTF.

Id like to see us make a jump next year similar to what Florida did this season. But we have GOT to get to portalling. Have to replace half the rotation this off-season.

This is fair. I’m gonna let him actually put together the 2025 roster before I blow the horn, considering he was somewhat handicapped in year one.

But again, fair. I agree he’s a good floor coach & if he’s gonna have success here he will have to put together a complete roster.

If more of his critics posted stuff like this instead of “hah we lost!” / “worst coach to ever coach!” we’d probably be able to have infinitely more substantial conversations about the future of the program on this board.

Solid thread dude.

The end all be all of whether or not we have success with McMahon is the guys suiting up.. I genuinely believe he got damn near the most out of this roster. Obviously recruiting and roster construction is the responsibility of the coach, so I’m not giving him a free pass on it.

I cannot emphasize enough that we NEED a good portal. If our portal is trash the core that is here needs to make a massive jump (which I doubt will happen).

The only upside I am holding on to is the fact that MM was 17-14 in his first season at Murray St then 16-17 in his second season then after that had single digit losses in his next 5 years.

So in theory next year should be much better, but It seems like something is missing in his teams. Its as if the urgency isn't there or something.

They start off in the SEC 3-1 then lose 3 in a row, win a game, drop another 3 in a row, then they beat South Carolina & Kentucky back to back then with 6 games left they go 3-3 in that stretch. There isn't consistent play.

LSU is ranked 30th in recruiting with 2 4 stars coming in, but you need experienced players to win. He really does need to work the transfer portal and there are some decent players out there. If he doesn't bring in anything special out of the transfer portal its going to be the same thing in 2024-25

Uh ... what?!?

LSU has no men's NCAA Basketball championships.
LSU has never appeared in the Championship game.
LSU has not appeared in the Final 4 in 18 years.

LSU is 58th in All-Time wins, behind 5 (soon to be 7) other SEC teams.

LSU hasn't produced a 1st Team All-NBA player in 30 years.

LSU is not a men's basketball brand any more than Kentucky is a football brand.

there was significant improvement this year. I have no quarrel with McMahon. as long as things keep heading the right direction and progress is mae. a disaster last year, a 500 SEC record this year. maybe towards the top 4 in the league next year and a tourney bid.

I know its the portal era, and every year is new, and programs are not built over time with a process, they are totally reworked every year. maybe that's true. maybe the system doesn't matter, and its a fresh start every year, not a gradual building of a foundation.

maybe. but maybe not. last year we thought Mizzou had an insta-rebuild and were ahead of us. not anymore, they are a fricking disaster. they are back to square one. while we have made progress. maybe mcmahon is building a "culture" of sustained accountability and success. maybe not. college sports are different now, its early and this new transfer and NIL thing isn't solved yet.

I saw we appreciate the improvement and expect more. we appear to be on the upswing.

I miss wade too.

I dissagree with most on here. I think his coaching is fine. It is fair to question the talent he is bringing in from this point forward imo. If we improve year 3 and make NCAA tourney I am happy with the progression, but would really like to start seeing us in the mix for upper level SEC talent. So far that has been the gap imo. We have a lot of guys that would get pt at other schools and possibly start, but I don’t think we have any guys that would be any other decent SEC team’s first or second option.

McNeese's 19-game improvement ties the biggest single season turnaround in college basketball history.

Damn good post with a single exception-LSU is most certainly not "an above average basketball brand."
