Dentist spouse here. hang around on Dentaltown forum and you'll find there are two kinds of dentists.
Those who have dropped Delta Dental and those who are about to drop Delta.
Wife's office personnel uses BCBS though.

"Crowns vary in price for different reasons but there no way it would have been close to $800 if we just paid them..."

Depending on location, $800 may just cover the lab costs.

For crowns and/or expensive charges my dentist takes Care Credit - interest free money for up to two years. Otherwise I just pay for cleanings and checkups.

They usually aren’t great. Ours is with Humana.

I chose the lowest tier, it’s only two free cleanings. But it’s much cheaper than just paying out of pocket. I know this from previously not having dental.

People on the family plans are paying way way more than I am. But those plans cover shite like braces.

"The best dental insurance one can get."

Yeah, well, still have to pay lab fees, precious metal fees.

I guess it just depends on your cost and how much you use it. We have Aetna through my work and pay $17 per month. It covers two cleanings/x-rays per year and has a $50 deductible per person ($150 max for a family of four). Covers 80% on fillings and such and 50% on crowns, root canals, etc. also has an ortho benefit of $2,500 per person. I realize that this setup is really good compared to others, but if you’re getting any major work done, I find that it’s definitely worth having, as long as you stay within network.

spoilers: all insurance sucks

If it was a good deal for most people, they wouldn’t be in business. It’s almost always better to put money in a high-yield savings than pay an insurance premium, if you don’t need the deferred expense.

Dentist here. Yes they all are terrible. They are not “insurance.” They are a 1-2k benefit and that is it. Dina is probably the worst I’ve ever seen. I give major discounts to those not hassling with policies and paying cash/credit/third party financing.

This is pretty much exactly what I have through MetLife. My company actually switched from Cigna to MetLife this year for dental(still have Cigna for health). Our coverage through Cigna was similar, but they wanted to almost triple our monthly premium and MetLife was just a touch higher than what we paid last year. I paid $90 for two fillings two weeks ago. The $2500 toward ortho per family member is nice to have. My 11 year old is in braces and my wife is about 6 months into Invisalign.

There was a good Freakonomics podcast about this. Basically, dental insurance acts like a gift card, and unlike medical insurance, your benefits are capped at a certain dollar amount.

That seems to be the issue with Dina... dentists seem to be leaving the network left and right

Yeah that’s because Dina’s reimbursement sucks arse; along with most of the dental insurances out there. If I was in-network with all these carriers, I’d have to close my practice.

I've seen dentists routinely charge over the insurance coverage limit and the patient responsible for the difference.

From a patient perspective, it isn't a big deal so long as the balance owed is disclosed prior to services rendered.

My dentist dropped my insurance without telling me. I had a crown and paid 200. Of the 1200 bill, never heard anything until one dentist sold out to another dentist. That’s when I found out they hadn’t filed.

Now it’s been over a year and I am trying to file with the insurance company myself. They are denying it because it was more than a year. I have filed an appeal

Dentist turned it over to collections. The hits just keep coming

Wife's work insurance offered us them. She works for a large hotel chain. I can't believe how shite the coverage is. Reading this thread, it seems that's the way it is with all of them. We bought up to the "premium" plan and it still only gives you a max of I think $2k and maybe even it's a lifetime max for certain things. Root canal recently cost me $2k out of pocket. 3 teeth. I think I may tell her to cancel these clowns and just do the plan our local dentist offers. $200 for the year and includes cleanings and discounts for other stuff.

I have Delta Dental and get 4 cleanings a year. The best ‘insurance’ is to brush and floss and not eat sugar. Same with medical insurance don’t be an obese slob and exercise and eat right. I go to dr once a year for annual exam. That’s it.
