If you can't picture things are you able to read fictional books?

My girlfriend has aphantasia and LOVES reading science fiction. I don’t get it, but she does.

When I took tests, I always pictured in my mind the actual text from the textbook with the answer on it.

Same.

Also, with math tests, I could always close my eyes, picture the chalk board when the teacher explained how to solve/simplify a function or whatever. Open my eyes and recreate the answer with the current numbers and variables.

Wait so if you’ve seen something before, you can’t close your eyes and picture it? Sometimes in great detail.

I did not know this was a thing. Now I want to read more about this, but I just can't see myself doing it.

Wait. Do people actually visualize images in their mind?

Yes. And my mind is hyperactive, it looks like a video on fast forward.

The best way I can describe it is that I see the idea of a red star, but all I see is black.

It seems like there are two very different tracks here. Imagination and the brain’s visualization.

The idea of a red star is imaginary. Your brain producing the image is a physical reality.

I read fiction but it does not create pictures in my mind.

*my husband claims he sees pictures

Is it weird that I can't tell if I see a red star or if I only see the idea of a red star? I think I just see black but I'm not sure.

I get detailed visualizations at times. Almost hallucinatory.

I picture what people I talk with over the phone look like in my head. Same with people on the radio if I've never seen them. Some I'm way off base on, but I've nailed some others.

This past week when I heard about the bus that crashed I had a picture of a crashed bus in my head. My picture of the bus was no where close to being the skeleton of a bus like it really was.

Do you have any detailed, very realistic dreams?

I can close my eyes and see people walking in front of a 1970’s Dime store in a place I have never been. I wasn’t even alive in the 70’s. It’s like with dreams, I can go down a path and it’s like a Rolodex of dreams. The mind is incredible.

Not being able to imagine, dream, or have an inner monologue is associated with being an NPC or possibly even lacking the touch of Divinity.

I dream, sometimes vividly, and my inner monologue doesn't shut up, but I can not see images of things in my conscious mind.

Okay if I ask you to picture your husband in your mind or anyone you know, do you just see a black screen? Like how do you remember anything that has happened to you if not by visualizing those events?

It's crazy I can't visualize a star but can dream normally nightly, you'd think the two would be related

I see the red star that China uses on their military uniforms.

If you look at this picture of a red star on this cap today, can you not visualize it in your head tomorrow?
