You wouldn't try for 1 million bucks? 1 hour?

I feel like getting to that point would be way harder than just standing there

Where is that?

Did someone really carve out a flat path out of that rockface?

I wonder what that process was like.

Yes, can I be assured as I plummet to my death that the deposit was made?

absolutely, YES.

if someone would walk me out there and back safely, I'd go for it.

It would change your life one way or another.

Sure. But I have been there, though roped, but I could stand there for an hour no problem, hell if I could sit I would stay all day for $500k per hour. The problem is you can't stand up straight backed and it would get pretty tiring after an hour if you weren't comfortable moving around. It is ~1600ft up the regular Northwest Face route on Half Dome in Yo Valley and gives a great view of the entirety of Yosemite Valley. Legendary climb. The route was fairly easy when I did it 5.9 A1 with one night on the wall but there was a flake that exfoliated a few years years ago that requires a higher level aid or a serious free pitch and probably adds 2 hours to the climb if you are aiding.

Normally I’d agree, but it’s a pretty good post IMO. Very relevant.

No.....from experience when I was on the observation floor of one of the twin towers in NYC I walked up to one of the windows and looked down and my knees buckled on me I almost fell down.

I would be willing to bet Obtuse has said more interesting things in the span of a week than you have your entire life.

Nah. 25 year old me sure. But not with three kids and not for a million. I'd probably sneeze and die.

I think a lot about what risks are worth it as a dad, in part because you want to exhibit to your kids that there are risks worth taking, for personal success, for them, or just because. But I don't think standing on a ledge for an hour has any virtue in that regard

No, I wouldn’t. The muscles would get so fatigued after 30 minutes of standing erect and still enough to balance that it would be difficult to do it for the next half hour. Risk of falling would be too great. If others could do it, good for them. I wouldn’t take the chance for an amount of money that didn’t allow me to quit working.

Pay off my mortgage and put my 3 kids through college, with plenty left over. Get rid of my biggest expense each month for standing somewhere for an hour? Sign me up.
