I don't personally know a single person who's ever fired a gun in self-defense, but I have witnessed at least two accidental discharges.

I guess everyone needs to make their own evaluation. My logic is that the likelihood of ever needing to use my gun in self-defense is incredibly small. And of those situations, only in a small percent would I not have time to rack a round. That must be weighed against the likelihood of an accidental discharge resulting from mechanical failure or user error, which I perceive to be greater.
