Kids want to go where they can win. Year 1 there was a huge cloud over our head and new coaches. We had nothing to market skilled players other than playing time at a mid-level basketball school. Coach had 2 players returning. That is not plug in a few good portal guys to go with solid recruiting class situation. You guys that keep saying transfer portal, win right away, etc. are ignorant to our situation.

Kinda sad when just to finish in the top half of the SEC is considered a major accomplishment.
You realize there are 6 SEC teams ranked in the top 25, right?

youre getting lots of downvotes but if LSU can find a way to win tonight we will be favored in every remaining regular season game and have a chance to go 19-12

This should offer a little perspective for our spoiled football and baseball fans, who have had it so good for what seems like two decades

Show me the long list of recent coaching hires that took a program from rock bottom (yes, that’s where we were after Wade was fired) into a tourney team in two years.
Oats is the closest one I can find but he took over a functional albeit below average program.
I can't quite put my finger on it, but I seem to recall another coach that took a program at rock bottom (assuming you consider 10-21 and last place in the conference with 2 total conf. wins to be "rock bottom") and made them a tourney team in two years. Maybe one of the other posters can remember who it was?

Will Wade went 9-9 in the SEC his last season at LSU.
That team was a 6 seed in the NCAA tournament

It’s simply a false narrative, let’s compare the year prior to McMahon arriving to McMahon’s first season in terms of player losses and retention.
2021-22- we lost 8 players and retained 4.
2022-23 (McMahon’s 1st season)- we lost 8 players and retrained 3.
Not much difference

Did you see what Kentucky did to Auburn in Auburn last week? Kentucky is really really playing good right now. The line is 7.5 and I think should be 10-12. Pray for a win but don’t expect it. LSU has a long way to go.
Kentucky is also a very young team which is susceptible to a hiccup game. Its tough for even veteran talented teams to string together more than 3 to 4 wins. Its just the nature of the game. The point spread is irrelevant, its what happens on a given night. This team has had sustained periods of competitive play against Tennessee, Alabama, South Carolina and Florida. Hopefully they won't have to overcome a large deficit tonight and combined with a large crowd cheering them on they get a signature win.

comparing Kansas with LSU or Pearl with McMahon shows just how stupid and bitter you really are
Great point. Although Pearl is a media darling and nationally known coach his first three years at Auburn were not very good, Even though he did not take over a program under NCAA investigation and facing possible draconian sanctions his record was
2014–15 Auburn 15–20 4–14 13th
2015–16 Auburn 11–20 5–13 13th
2016–17 Auburn 6–14 0–11 11th
They did have to vacate 7 SEC wins in 2017 due to assistant coach and former Auburn star Chuck Person's involvement in a scandal with Adidas. Even with credit for those wins Pearl was 16-38 on court in the SEC in his first three seasons.

Great point.
Except it's not. Pearl didn't have ability to mine a transfer portal of over 1000 players who would be immediately eligible. The only means he had available to him to immediately improve the roster as HS signees, JUCO players, and grad students.
Coaches, by and large, don't like the transfer rules. But I don't think you'd find a single one who would tell you the rules don't provide more opportunity to improve your roster quickly than at any point in the history of the sport (Of course, the downside is your roster can be decimated just as quickly).
Comparing "rebuilds" pre-2020 to post 2020 is foolish. For better or worse, they are completely different environments.
If you want to support your argument a better one would be to look at Rick Pitino at St. John's. HOF coach who is struggling in year 1 after taking over a program that lost 11 players from last year's team.

No matter how many times we tell you people you don't get it that whether recruits are high school players or portal transfers the fact LSU was under NCAA investigation and facing possible draconian sanctions was a significant hinderance to signing players. Mcmahon had to recruit an entire roster, Pearl inherited a few players . McMahon convinced three players to return, Adam Miller coming off serious knee surgery, Mwani Wilkinson who ended up missing most of the season with a shoulder injury and Juice Williams who had a half year of college basketball after joining the team the previous January. Now that the NCAA issues have been resolved we are seeing an up surge in recruiting and transfers and it will continue to develop. Whether McMahon gets the program back into SEC contention is undetermined but the signs are promising. He does need to hold onto the base players like Reed, Ward, Williams and Cook. It would be great to sign a couple of transfers like Dalton Knecht, Mark Sears or Tari Eason

Frick - can we just appreciate the improvement of possibly going 9-9 in the SEC after going 2-16 in year 1?

Perhaps because your argument doesn't mesh with reality. Despite the "draconian" sanctions and "good players not wanting to come to LSU" McMahon signed (still to date) his best recruiting class. Two top 70 players (Reed and Ward) plus a fringe top 100 guy in Shawn Phillips. All three of the returnees you mentioned had options to leave for major programs (ex. Wilkinson visited a Texas Tech program coming off a NCAAT appearance)...yet they chose to stay despite the "dark cloud". Plus, LSU brought in a guy in KJ Williams (who most rated as a top 10 transfer). He was the OVC POY. He definitely had plenty of suitors. Yet, he joined his HC despite the "doom and gloom" purportedly hanging over the program.
The fans saw doom and gloom. The players saw opportunity which is why both McMahon's recruiting class and transfer class were both rated in the top 20. It was only after the terrible season that they suddenly were considered to be "bad players".

Are we? Again, McMahon's first HS class is rated higher than his current one. We don't know what the transfers will look like yet, but last year he was largely limited to guys with Louisiana ties as the factor that brought them to LSU (Cook, Stewart, Wright, Dean). He wasn't casting a wide net in terms of transfers.
Now, if LSU can finish the season strong they can recapture the benefit of the doubt they lost following last year's dismal season. That may help in the transfer market AND retaining current players. But it, and has ALWAYS been complete revisionist history to say McMahon was left with only scrubs available to him in his first season. Anyone and everyone who covered college basketball thought he had a decent roster going into last season. It was only after he woefully underperformed that some decided to absolve the coach of any criticism, instead, blaming the former coach and the "terrible players" (who those same people didn't think were terrible before the season) for the shortcomings.

Trying to talk sense to emotionally challenged Wade fans is pointless. It is AMAZING how hard they will work to crap on Mcmahon. It's as if their lives depend on it. There is no bigger fan of LSU sports than me. I was there during the late 70's and early 80's. So I know what a great BBall program looks like. Been there trough the winning years of Brady, the losing years of Jones and Johnson and the winning years of Wade who I loved. Same with football. Yet I understand how lucky we were to get any coach worth a crap to come here after Wade under those circumstances. And how difficult it would be to recruit any players under those circumstances. These Mcmahon haters are pretty much losers in real life. There can be no other explanation. They are miserable and want others to be miserable with them. Mcmahon gets his 3-4 years to right he ship. He is taking the right steps this year and I expect even better things next year. Year one was a throw away year. Period.

OP's original statement does hold but is still a hypothetical. How many times have we gotten up for a big jump start game in the Pmac only to be embarrassed?. those of us who actually follow the sport understand what a horrible matchup UK is for this LSU team.

We need Hannibal to have one of his animalistic rebounding performances again. Even when he can’t get the rebound, we need him to help us get the rebounds. This applies to all of our guards, but he’s the one that can make the difference.
