I have no dog in this fight at all, but he didn't say anything about letting them off the hook. That would be to set them free. All he stated is he is against the death penalty.
Now as a follow up, somebody needs to ask how does he intend to stop tax payer money from keeping them in prison for life.
Personally, they do manual labor for food, water, the bed they sleep in. They grow their own food. They buy food from the earnings of what ever product they make.

This is a bad take. Some folks are relatively militantly pro-life. I can respect that. I am probably closer to your position than McMakin's, just FTR.
Also, in Louisiana, the alternative to the death penalty is life in Angola (or St. Gabriel). I don't think that fits "off the hook" in anybody's dictionary.
