Think it’s become a lost practice, but heard in the oil field if a baw could throw chain he was the king of the rig. Watching a show where one baw claimed to be the best chain thrower this side of the Mississippi.

Any baws here know how to throw chain? Stories?

That sounds like something they do at Texas A&M. So no, I don’t.

Yes but only when our spinners went down once offshore. It’s easier to do if you’re a lefty.

I doubt there are any rigs left throwing tongs these days. I was 160 lbs soaking wet trying to work those big arse tongs with 3 swivel points. I didn’t so much throw them as ride them.

ETA these big bastards.

just watched a video. That looks so goddamn dangerous. Why would anyone do this if there's another method available.

Because up until around the 80’s there wasn’t another method available.

I don't know where those rigs are at they are throwing chain on. Not any of the major basins, hell most of those older rigs have been scraped/retired.

Yes, a few moons ago. Got out around the time top drives became the new fad. I too still have all of my digits.

Latshaw has some old style drilling rigs still but I doubt they are throwing chains. Now work over rigs are another story altogether. There’s still some antiques out there.

All you need is a 3 foot pipe wrench on some of those work over rigs
