Throw in Lively...and Mavs are set at the 5. Doncic will make both of those guys into scorers...with his passing. But then, Doncic makes everybody better. If Mavs figure out a way to trade us out of Herb...they are instantly...VERY serious contenders.

Mavs know their weakness...they need an exterior defender than can shoot decent C&S 3s after getting a pass from Doncic. They made a HUGE overbid for Thybulle before the season started...but Trail Blazers matched it. NO TELLIN' WHAT...the Mavs would offer to pry Herb loose from the Pels. Do we need Kyrie ?? (G)

I think it’s pretty clear Herb isn’t on the block, and even if he was, the Mavs are a terrible trade partner pick for the Pels.

All their role players are older and worse than Herb and they have no picks to trade.

Gafford would give the same effort here that he did in WAS.. these guys don't want to play here.....

It's honestly funny that we even bother trying to chase guys like Dinwiddie because they have a dozen teams they'd rather play for, and they'll take less money to go there too

You are aware Herb signed a 4 year extension with us this past offseason? Exactly how do you think the Mavs can get around that. I mean other than offer Luka for him in a trade.

Gafford would have been fun, but Mavs gave up a 2028 pick swap to get him. That could be a Nets-Tatum kind of blunder for them giving up picks so far in the future, when Luka may be on another team by then. Are we really sure that Pels can't get a very similar player in the draft like Yves Missi from Baylor? Who would cost around 5 mil. on a 4 year contract with more upside to grow, and still be able to have enough luxury tax room to re-sign JV or another starting C.

Teams like the Mavs and Wolves go all in with their future picks because they have a clear Alpha elite, top-10 healthy, young player in their early prime (Luka, Edwards). Clippers and Bucks, have elite top-10 alphas to contend with. Pelicans haven't had that and still don't, if we're being honest.

You would rather have Beasley and Vanderbilt and about $20 million more in salary than having Hawkins? Because that’s what I’m hearing. And that’s if you decided to keep Beasley, which the Lakers didn’t because he wasn’t very good for them and would have been expensive to resign.

So would you trade Hawkins for Vanderbilt?

I'm not sure I would have made a trade for Gafford, although I have in the past said he's a guy I wanted.

The point I'm making is that this is a trade that will propel the Mavs upward just like last year's trades did the Lakers.

Short-term it's a win for the Mavs just like it was for the Lakers. Long-term, probably not.

Mavs would have to offer up Lively for Pels to even consider trading Herb to them

I would agree the Mavs made some win now trades that will help them because they filled gaping holes with real NBA players. With where they are with Luka, they had to, despite the cost. But don't get caught up in a statistical anomaly. Per 36 minutes, Gafford as a Mav is averaging 31/23. For his career he's averaging 16/10 per 36, so he will revert to the mean soon enough.

Would I take Gafford over JV? I'd honestly need to do more research and see how switchable he is. I'm leaning no but could probably be talked into it if he was switchable.

Would I take Gafford over Nance? Yes, but only because Nance can't stay healthy. This team has played some of its best ball with Nance, so I do wonder what it would look like with another switchable big in the mix.

22-23 NetRtg as Lakers

Hachimura +2.2
Vanderbilt -1.0
Beasley -2.2

Hachimura was a separate trade, and the Pels 2nds were spoken for thanks to Devonte Graham. There probably was some addition by subtraction moving Westbrook, and D'angelo Russell has actually been solid for them, but everyone acts like that trade was some home run that Ainge gifted them and that is not even close to an accurate assessment. The parts of that trade that the Pels could have duplicated at the expense of Hawkins haven't really been that helpful.

It's a minor upgrade for the Mavs at their backup center position. Last night, they were tied with the Wizards with four minutes left. At home.

Let's hold off on the propel stuff until we see it.

The Lakers were actually able to sign Dinwiddie because they were able to give him considerably more than a minimum deal, because they still had some MLE left.

What a ridiculously ignorant statement. You show how much of a casual you are (at best).

The only reason they gave up the swap is because they did not have a tradeable 1st. We do. Our protected 2024 would have been enough when paired with salary.

Or possibly the Bucks '24 pick we have would have done it. Jonas was the salary piece as he is expiring, though I admit that might have hurt us the rest of the regular season. On the other hand, pretty sure Jonas gets forced off the floor in playoffs where Gafford might be able to stay on with his shot blocking. Could change math if Pels know they want to resign Jonas and have a handshake agreement on a number.

I liked Gafford (I liked him '19 when I hoped Pels would take him in the second. Didi, anybody?). He's on a good contract for two more years and I thought a change of scenery from the awful Wizs would energize his game.

That said there is some merit to the argument that maybe we are holding our picks because we are going to need cheap talent in the seasons ahead and drafting an approximation of Gafford in the late first round is very possible.
