I live in a lower class neighborhood and we don’t have flashy things

Every time I drive by multimillion dollar mansions all I see is beat up old Hyundais and Kias. You would think those rich people could afford something better.

You should look in the mirror and ask yourself these questions.

You know this topic reminds me of the concept of stealth wealth. I read about it a couple of years ago. It's the idea that flaunting wealth is for the lower classes and the bourgeoisie, which is the wealthier of the middle class. Sorta like the Perlis types you might find in Uptown New Orleans. They love to show off.
You seldom see however the true middle class or elite wealthy flaunting anything. The middle class doesn't flaunt because they don't have it and the elite wealthy don't flaunt because it would be unbecoming to do so but make no mistake about it, the elites in this country do indeed believe they're better than the rest of us, even if they don't outwardly show it.
So what the truly wealthy do is they flaunt for each other. Unlike back in the 90's when the wealthy flaunted for Robin Leach and the masses. Back then, the wealthy put on a show for us all and we got a kick out of it.
Well now the wealthy do things and wear things for instance that only those of their kind can appreciate. Like maybe men will wear what appears to be a regular ball cap when in fact it's some sorta cashmere thing that costs two thousand dollars. Well we might not know that it's more than just a ball cap but another elite wealthy type would. Unlike the 90's and before, the wealthy nowadays have set themselves apart from the rest of us in a somewhat dishonest and subversive way.

Ehhhh, I find million dollar + gaudy houses on small-ish lots equally confusing. I can't comprehend how wealthy I would need to be to consider a million dollar home with very little land a good idea. A million dollars of land? frick yea.

You live in your car, but you can't drive your house.

1. Everyone thinks they work hard and deserve nice things.
2. People want to be valued in society. They believe others value what they possess.
3. Half of society has an IQ below 100.
4. A large percentage of the 50% with an IQ above 100 don’t ponder eternity or question how they can help others.
5. Almost everyone has issues with delayed gratification and long term vision.
Combine all those factors and you see nothing but poor decisions.
The antidote is learning to live:
1. Simply - not living without things but not possessing things that cause you stress.
2. Selflessly - not living as a pauper but not living indulgently while others suffer.
3. Sacrifically - not living as a martyr but spending your life as a living sacrifice to your creator.

I was having a conversation with a friend about a somewhat parallel topic. When I didn't have much money I loved fancy name brand expensive cloths. Now I can pretty much afford whatever clothes I want, I find I buy for value and utility instead of labels. For example my favorite jeans are $13 Member's mark jeans from Sam's club. Heck most of my pants come from Sam's club. If I buy clothes it's normally something I spot on a clearance rack cheap. Unless it's clothing for my outdoors hobbies then money is no object. Technical jackets and garments is the one area where quality for me is more important than value as I spend a lot of time outside and in the woods. Took me a bit of growing up to realize $100 for a pair of jeans with a label that might impress a few folks was a complete waste of money when $15-20 would wear just as well. They key to happiness is to get to that old-man state of mind where you just don't give a damned what other people think about you.

Because they have never had very much so by flaunting stuff makes them feel like they are doing something with themselves or they are something special

Financial illiteracy and materialistic predilections exacerbated by pop culture phenomena, namely, social media, music, and television...

I love it when I pass by section 8 housing and see people turning in, driving BMW's, Benzes, etc. Warms my heart to see my tax dollars being put to good use.

I’m amazed every time I read one of those OT watch threads. Nothing screams “flashy” like the need to own a $10k+ watch.
Most people don't notice watches. The only people you'll impress are other watch nerds.

Help BabyTac understand why this is???
It's the same as people who refer to themselves in the third person or use superfluous punctuation marks.
It's an effort to assuage their feeling of inadequacy in certain areas of their life.

they want to feel good about something, get attention they crave
sometimes even a little attention is better than none

They have seen the gold carriage and thousand carat jeweled crown flashed by the Queen and King of England and are matching it as closely as they can.

Makes them feel better. That’s what mostly shops at Louis Vuitton in Canal Place, along with the tourists.
