It's not an "obscure holiday" It's a religious holiday....

Mardi Gras is celebrated in New Orleans, Venice and Rio

Fat Tuesday is the day before a religious day of obligation, (Ash Wednesday is traditionally observed with fasting and abstinence from meat in several Christian denominations)

Which is the beginning of Lent,

quote:

The French name Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday, from the custom of using all the fats in the home before Lent in preparation for fasting and abstinence.

Mobile should still be part of Louisiana. I wonder if we can look into annexing it.

Have you actually ever been to Mardi Gras in NOLA? You sound like one of the people who have never been and assume the parades go down Bourbon street and it's only drunk people in the Quarter. 99% of Mardi Gras happens outside of the Quarter and is actually a very family friendly block party type experience.

I’ve been to Mardi Gras all over the NOLA area. From LaPlace to Belle Chase, I’ve seen them all. Last parade I went to down there was in Metairie in 2012. I stand by what I said. Trash everywhere you go.

I'm sorry you have a drinking problem and can't enjoy Mardi Gras without being "trashed everywhere." It's sad.

New Orleans is fun, but I enjoy the parade route in Metairie more. We typically go near the Total Wine off Vets in Old Metairie.

New Orleans is the real Mardi Gras!!

Been invited to a St Charles Ave. Balcony with food drinks and bathroom.
The only thing that concerns me is traffic, parking and vandalism.
But I say YOLO!!
Sure miss the days of not worrying about any of those things and just going and what happens happens!! When I was a teenager.
Older me- Balcony on St Charles
Younger me- drinking all day walking everywhere then losing your group and not having a ride home.
(We are not the same person)

Thanks. Please keep the debauchery, vomit, piss and trinkets contained in that toilet known as New Orleans.

I'm sorry you never got invited to a party with a bathroom/food/drink/music and hot chicks. You will survive but please don't take your anger out on your poor innocent children when they go to Mardi Gras without you.

Been Catholic my entire life. When did Ash Wednesday become a holy day of obligation?

Plus they started Mardi Gras.

Mobile holding parades in August and New Year's Eve in the 1860s does not = Mardi Gras.

The first Mardi Gras celebration in the New Orleans area was in 1699, and New Orleans was parading regularly by 1857. Mardi Gras truly became big in Mobile after Joe Cain saw it in New Orleans in 1867 and then brought it back to Mobile.

Mardi Gras was fun through college. Now it’s just a pain in the arse. Despite having access to houses on routes and parking, I would rather just go out of town with the family Friday through Wed.

Same, I’d rather go hangout at the camp and drink beer around the fire pit.

Well maybe its not, maybe I was just brainwashed. It one of the reasons I dont practice Catholicism anymore after being a practicing Catholic for 35 years
