This is similar to what I would do during my competitive days. Warming up for shorter races like a 5K is very important if you want to run fast.

Reminds me of a thread on Reddit I read last year from someone asking about warming up before a marathon. Most responses were a form of, "I usually run about 2 miles, and by that point I only have 24.1 more miles to go"
