Sure. If we had to. But we don't.
And my wife staying home makes all of our lives easier.
This! We've been married for over 39 years and raised three kids on a one earner income.

My husband and I both work, both make six figures. Thankfully we did have grandparents to help when our daughters were younger, but they went to daycare as well. There are times when we’ve had to take turns being at school programs, sports, etc, but we’re both at 90% of things. I still “run the house.” Groceries, cook, laundry, clean, finances, errands. I love my job and the satisfaction I get from it. Both of my girls are smart, well-adjusted & very independent. I like to think I’m raising my girls to know you can have both. You can have a great career & be a good wife/mom. I don’t think the two have to be mutually exclusive.

When our kids were little, I worked full time out of true necessity and then not at all and didn’t like that so part time was it for me. Brought kids to school and picked them up so what I did while they were at school didn’t matter. One day I mentioned working full time and they were like “wait .. why? Who will pick us up and all of that??”
So what does she do now? All of ours are grown and gone, grandkids live away and I work part time one or two days. The other I clean house and then do what I want. I feel awful and lazy for that.
But dinner is always cooked, house mostly clean and laundry always done.
Living the life I guess .. and I appreciate my husbands work immensely.

Are most conservative members here single HH income? Would you be open to your wife working and putting kids in daycare?
We are single income HH. Sure, more money would be great but we’re not hurting and I think the time with our kids is more valuable than any amount of money she could bring in.

I hope he's an on call surgeon or something.

My wife enjoys cooking even though she works. We do pay a cleaning team to clean once a week.
One day my wife will decide to quit working full time but I'm not sure when that will be. She's 6 years younger than me so she thinks she wants to keep working for a few years but she had foot surgery and has been off since Thanksgiving.
Truthfully, I think she's enjoyed hanging out with me way too much in the past couple months. I'm actually a pretty cool dude and I gave a lot of fun.

I don’t want to renew my certifications in May 2028 so I’ll retire then if not before .. possibly when more grandbabies come (hopefully some will be nearby).
I’m not sure I’m/we’re going to like both being retired and at home. We’re cool people but it’ll be a definite adjustment period.

No way in hell I'd put them in daycare. But I wouldn't have had kids if I had to put them in daycare
When I was getting my 2nd BS degree all my professors were women and only 1 was without kids. They would all talk about how strange ideas and stuff that they were doing, saying, etc. was confusing as the parents were pretty much the opposite of the coin.
Never occurred to them strange stuff happens when you allow strangers to raise your kids. They paid as much for someone else to raise their kids as they were earning or more on top of things too.

Strangers are going to be raising your kids from 5-18 regardless if they go to daycare or not

Married men of the OT, how many of you are single income HH?
My wife doesn’t work but she takes care of the house which is a pretty big job. Cooks, cleans, bills, all other house related items that come up. Makes everyones life easier. I make $400k+ a year so we don’t really need to have her work and stress out about the everyday stuff.

This guy again. Baby Tac is a professional Douche Nozzle, not an amateur as he’s been one since age 9 (a child prodigy if you will amongst the douche community), but also a professional turning pro at age 18. He’s actually the top rated or #1 Douche Nozzle in the world according to the WOSD (World Series of Douching)2023 rankings which just came out last week. Baby Tac, or Big Baby Massengill as he’s known in the douching community, is a world renown douche nozzle whose known worldwide for his douche nozzling skills and will no doubt go down as the GOAT of douching and the greatest ever to grace not only the vaginal but also the anal entrances in the competitive douching world!! Like Alabama basketball coach Nate Oats (a huge douche nozzle himself) has said, “Big Baby Massengill gets into places where no one would dare to go. He just makes it look so easy I mean he really is Dr. Douchenstien.”

My wife started staying at home when our first son was 1. She was a teacher prior to that. She stayed at home until 2 years ago when our youngest was 8. It was around 12 years of her being a stay at home mom.
It was a struggle in the early years, until I started making better money. We wouldn’t have done it differently. It worked out great for us. She started teaching again and this is her second year back full time. The extra money allows us to travel a little more and save a lot more.

In. We have a 2 year old and a 4 month old, she took off after the first kid. She was a teacher so not like she made good money. We valued our time together as a family and quality of life more than let’s say $1-2k more a month (after daycare costs). But to each their own.

“To each their own” can be said up to a point.. but for a lot of families $1-2k more a month is a pretty big deal and can lead to a much better quality of life.
I think it’s pretty easy to say “we value our time together more than money” when Dad is pulling $250k+. But it’s a much more impressive thing to say if he’s at say $90k.
I’m not sure what right the “tipping point” income figure would be to go single income. A lot of factors at play in that decision (number of kids, private school, etc)

We were for several years when it didn’t make sense to pay for daycare for 3 kids. Once the kids were in school, my wife went back to work. Part time at first, then full time.

My wife is a homemaker/stay at home mom and we live just off of my income. I’d be fine for my wife to go back to work if that’s what she wanted to do, but I don’t need her to.

My wife stayed home when I made $90k/year. In fact when I quit my job and went back to school full time, she stayed home with my first born and we had saved enough money to support us without her working. I make considerably more than that now, but I worked my way up with my wife at home with my kids. It’s possible. Every family is different, but my family focused on living well beneath our means and saving till it hurts. It has worked for us.
