using a sfp scope and you start turning knobs, you better make sure your on whatever power the manufacturer spec'd the scope for. Otherwise, your adjustments could be 1/2 or double whatever you think you are dialing.

It will only be off if you try to use the hash marks at different powers. Dialing whatever MOA/MIL you dial will be correct across all powers.

That's right, I was wrong. Using the reticle is what gets messed up.

And that's why I use ffp scopes, don't have to worry about anything.

Yeah pretty sure my next scope will be FFP that way I can dial or hold at any power if needed.
I had an instance this year that if I would have wanted to shoot the deer I wouldn’t have had enough time to dial but had enough time to hold for elevation.

It's an ultra super big deal for holding wind. I try to dial the range and hold off for the wind, and having a FFP is nice for that. Aint nobody got time to f with cranking windage knobs.

That said, I have a SFP mil dot scope, 3-9 and it's not bad at all. The reticle is scaled for 9x and any long range shooting is going to happen at 9x anyway, so it's not a problem. On the high zoom scopes, like the 5-20's and stuff I think FFP becomes really important. You might need the reticle all over that zoom range.

What's your priorities? Glass? Reliability? Now that I have one, I really like the SWFA 3-15x42. It's bombproof, good enough glass, great reticle, and enough scope to do whatever kind of long range shooting you might ever dream of. Can be had on sale for ~$600. The 3-9HD is supposedly even better but they're never in stock. If you plan on doing long range stuff, you should read the scope evaluations on rokslide. There are a lot of scopes out there that don't track reliably. Trijicon and Nightforce also get really high praises over there. Between those two and SWFA they span from $400 to $3200.

Agree. I have two of each SWFA 3-9X40 AND 3-15X40. They are both good hunting scopes, the 3-9 is better. Best reticle I've ever seen/used.

Bought a Trijicon Accupoint 2.5-10x56 before this season- really like it. It has an illuminated center dot on the reticle and doesn't take batteries. It's super nice and clear- mostly USA made as well.

Killed a nice buck with it earlier this month at 8am in a pretty dense swampy area, not much light and it performed really well.

I’ve got the Meopta Optika 6. It’s quirky, but is great glass for the price.

I still hate that Nikon got out of the scope business.

I like my Vortex Binoculars, I’d have to give that one a look. I went with a Meopta Optika 6 when I upgraded my glass a couple of years ago (aging eyes), and I couldn’t be more pleased.

My encouragement to anyone getting into long range shooting is to think of the scope as a sight and not an optic. Good glass is cool and all, but you really shouldn't be using your rifle to ID things in low light. The main thing the scope needs to do is accurately tell you where the bullet will land. Lots of scopes don't have a great reputation for doing that despite having really sexy glass, like swarvoski. Almost any scope is fine for minute of swamp deer at 200 yards. When you starting thinking about 500+ yards, zero retention and good tracking turrets are paramount. Read lots of reviews on rokslide, long range hunting forum etc (not paid for magazine reviews) and make sure what you're interested in has a good reputation with the long range hunting crowd. Make sure you check different sources, because every online forum gets a little fanboy-ish about certain stuff.

Trijicon, SWFA, nightforce, some Burris, and some leupold are mostly highly regarded.

You don’t need a 50mm objective. Use the savings to buy a better scope.
