I’m going to throw in Alex Smith to Vernon Davis in there. That one still stings.

Or Bucky Dent.

Capped off a major collapse.

West Virginia losing to Pitt in 2007.

Was coming to say this. Program has never won a national title before. Believe they may be the winningest program without one (at least among major conference teams).

All they had to do was beat a 4-7 Pitt team with a backup QB, at home and they get a chance to play an Ohio St team that frankly wasn't as good as they were the year before and would have been a very winnable game for them, probably even favored.

Then they choke. Pat McAfee missed 2 easy FGs. The high flying offense featuring Pat White, Steve Slaton, Owen Schmitt, Noel Devine and Darius Reynaud could only muster 1 TD. On the 100th edition of the rivalry no less

As an LSU fan it obviously had extra meaning to me since it propelled LSU into the title game which they would go on to win. But even if I wasn't a fan of LSU or any of the teams involved or benefitted, I don't think I'd ever forget that game. The Patriots losing in the SB on the Tyree helmet catch to spoil an undefeated season was bad but they still won 6 total SBs in their run to make up for it. WVU hasn't even been close since and don't really show any signs of getting back to those days anytime soon. It was their one shining chance and they blew it all on center stage for the world to see.

Brutal.

That is a good choice too but that 98 Vikings team was absolutely loaded. They would have beaten Denver that SB too.

I thought of the Super Bowl endings for those two teams.

Would be curious to see how fans of other teams rank them regarding to "signature loss"

Minnesota miracle would rank #1 for me followed by Beast Mode then the no call. Most people outside Saints fans and I suppose Rams fans don’t really still think about the no call

Cleveland Browns, both at the hands of Elway’s Broncos.

The Drive (1986)

The Fumble (1987)

Fernandez can't field an easy ground ball in the bottom of the 11th inning in Game 7 of the 1997 World Series. The winning run advances to 3rd base with one out. The Marlins score soon thereafter. And the Indians (they will never be Guardians to me) still haven't won the World Series.

Norwood and Wide Right in 91 is their signature, IMO. Coincidentally, it's likely one of the Giants' signature wins in their history.

Don’t forget Red Right 88 in the ‘81 playoffs.

The Browns were at the 13-yd line, down by two points, and only needed a FG to win. They threw an interception on third down.

Not even the most defining for that core. XL takes the cake. Holmgren publicly called out the officiating and didn't get fined.

Not that it makes the loss any more excusable, but Pat White got hurt early in the game and didn't come back till the last series or so.

Gary Anderson was perfect the entire season and playoffs until that kick. Woof.
