Didn’t know Jerry Rice put up 92-1211-7 at age 40

Rice may be the greatest football player ever. It is amazing how much better he was than EVERYONE else.

Julian Edelman also shagged Jerry's daughter in high school and routinely played with his super bowl rings in his home office when he wasn't home.

Is that Jerry’s wife or daughter. That chick looks old as shite for that age.

And that was after Warren Sapp completely wrecked his knee at age 35. I remember watching that game and everybody just assumed we had seen the last of Jerry Rice. Like there were discussions about retiring his jersey and shite.

And then he's back out there dominating in week one of the following season (age 36) and goes on to pile another 6,500 yards and 45 TDs onto his NFL records. That's crazy.

Yeah, we kind of forget just how big of a freak Jerry Rice was. He had a Hall of Fame career after 30. And when you put into context of today's NFL, when WRs have grown up in the 7 on 7 era and played in pass happy offenses in both college and a lot of times high school. guys are walking into the league and shooting to the top at 22, 23, 24 years old and are pretty much done by their early 30s.

I just did a quick look at the leaders in yards in '23, and of the 29 (?) guys that had 1,000 yards, almost all of them were in their mid 20s. I think I saw 2 guys who were 30, 2 more who were 31, and Adam Theilen was the oldest at 33, and he was sitting at #26. I do think a lot of that may have to do with the money these guys make now compared to the 80s and 90s--they can come in, play 8 years, and be worth 3, 4, 5 times what their 80s and 90s counterparts were and bounce while they can still walk.

But I don't think Jerry was motivated by money like that. He'd play as long as he could no matter how much money he'd banked. Like Tom Brady. Those dudes are just built differently and motivated by greatness and addicted to the daily grind to stay there. This is a good thread. We need to talk more about Jerry Rice--he's weirdly underappreciated.

Not sure if you know this, but Rice is generally considered the GOAT NFL wide receiver.

Yeah, if you look at some of oldest receivers to get 1k yards, it’s mostly old schools guys TO, Chris Carter, Steve Smith, Tim Brown at 35. Modern WRs seem like they tapped out at 31. Look at Julio, AJ, Chad Johnson, Brandon Marshall, Hopkins.

Route running, Rice was a master. He caught everything, then was a monster after the catch. You really think he wouldn't get open consistently against today's corners?

I think he would smoke them just like he did years ago.
