Taking his marbles & going home.

Can’t stand not having everything going his way.

Good riddance.

You’re basically saying LSU has no shot moving forward because we have the same monies as they do in reference.
I do think he doesn’t like the bullshite and quite frankly I don’t either.
To many uncontrollable moving parts for a control freak and I get it.
Young man’s game paying attention to everything else outside of the game of football.
Cheating some in recruiting was one thing but what’s happening now will ruin the sport if it continues without some reigns pulled.

I’m saying that the landscape is a lot harder now than it was 10 even 5 years ago. LSU is at a massive disadvantage. Not saying it can’t be done but NIL combined with the portal has put massive hill in the way.

Getting players to buy into the stuff that used to motivate is extraordinarily hard now. “ Team” is a nice concept but players are heavily motivated to ignore the team for Their own benefit financially. It’s too easy for them to do it. Saban saw this and knew it was time to get out.

Saban has been hinting at this for a few years . He did an interview a few years ago and mentioned a prominent business man in Tuscaloosa who was participating in NIL to help Saban get players. This is a guy that can call Saban directly.
Things were okay until players stopped showing up for engagements. He went to Saban and complained. Saban mentioned that the player was a good player and he had no issues with him. He was starting and contributing to the mission.
This is just one instance. There’s many others.

Saban went on to say NIL was putting even more pressure on the program to police these players.
He said they had to hire another team to deal with players who were not upholding their NIL deals and they’re really not suppose to be involved!

Even then he said, we have business helping with NIL and on top of the players not upholding their agreements, they can’t be certain that the player will stick around. They transfer and the business is left cold.

These are the frustrations he and all programs are dealing with. It’s a tremendous burden

You must be very young.

When Saban came to LSU the LSU Admin was a group of Good Ole Boys, who just went along to get along.
When he saw the previous staff's recruiting list it was almost non existent. He asked his staff to give him a list of the top Louisiana HS athletes. One name missing from the original recruiting list was a kid, Corey Webster. Webster came to LSU as a WR. Saban switched him to DB, He was a star and played several seasons as CB for the New York Giants.
Good example of why Saban won National Championships and Dinardo lost his job.

He has Drummond Gold in his pocket at Tuscaloosa. It’s like having a legitimate blank check. I think he’s just 72 and doesn’t like the new landscape and he’s proven everything he needs to prove.

Comments like this show the degree of misunderstanding of Saban and people like Saban. Money isn’t always their motivation. They live for football. They don’t just walk away.

Saban was upset when he had to go to the White House for a visit after winning the championship because He missed a week of recruiting.

Guys like Saban never say “I have enough”
They always want more.

He knows the landscape is perverted and Tuscaloosa is not a spot that will thrive in the current environment. He’s too old to Start over at another program so leaving coaching on a relatively high note makes sense.

He’ll still be involved in football though

Something like 30 players met with him after the Rose Bowl asking for more money, more touches so they can build their brand, etc. None of the players asked what the team needs to do to get back on top next season.

Saban knew it was time to go.

Oh you think Saban just decided after the Rose Bowl to retire. Bama Admins knew for weeks probably months that this was his last year. You think he just walked in to Byrnes office after the game and said im out? Dont be stupid all your life

He was play away from potentially getting one of his worst teams in the past 10 years back to the natty (which they would have won). Guy was an amazing coach. I'd hate to be the next coach. They'll be ready to run him off when he goes 9-3

This narrative is so hilarious. Saban got the best players because they wanted to play for the best coach in college football history. End of story.

NIL plus the portal spell trouble for Tuscaloosa.

To some degree

But Alabama as an institution is aligned and committed remaining successful in football. There is an argument that no one benefits more from the new CFB landscape than Alabama.

I’m sure all of this played a role, but also, the man’s in his 70s and has millions and millions in the bank.

He probably just wanted to go to the lake as he and his wife are aging. And rumors she has health issues.

Slidell you and I are the same guy. Saban is leaving at the right time as what else can he prove? He hasn’t lost the desire but he knows the deck isn’t stacked in his favor anymore. Just as he couldn’t control multimillionaire NFL players he can no longer control college football. The days of SEC bias for Bama is coming to an end. Under the table money is over. All cards on the table now. It’s good and bad. I do believe sensible rules will be developed to manage this NIL/transfer portal deal as if they aren’t it will ruin college football and that golden goose is too valuable to too many to choke. College football is going to come up with legal means to hold the athletes to some contractural standards and “salary caps” will be forth coming. Professional sports has these controls and college football will have to adopt that model.

Saban is all football all the time but the current climate isn’t favoring his desire to dominate. It’s going to be interesting to watch.
