Our Last Ford F-150 Lightning EV Pickup Road Trip Was a Nightmare

I've learned quite a few things driving MotorTrend's owned 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Lariat extended range pickup for the past year. For starters, my ABCs: Always Be Charging. If there's an open plug nearby, our Lightning is hooked to it so as to not waste the downtime. Lesson two: As my colleagues running our 2023 F-150 Lightning XLT in Detroit have learned, speed matters, and 70 mph is the frustratingly low sweet spot between maximum speed and range. And lastly, the 20 minutes or so spent route planning via the FordPass app and third-party sources like PlugShare can save at least twice that time on a road trip. Unfortunately, that last one went out the window when my wife and I got the call Labor Day afternoon about a family emergency nearly 600 miles away. Without hesitation, we grabbed our suitcases, stuffed them with clothes, and piled into the Lightning. That's where things almost immediately went awry.

We pulled off I-5 with 37 miles of range and a 14 percent charge, navigated through the 98 Tesla Supercharger stalls, dodged the holiday crowds stopping for dinner, and found the distinctive green glow of Harris Ranch's six Electrify America towers. Two were occupied by charging vehicles, one was completely offline with its screen dark, and one showed a "Charger Unavailable!" message, but the final two appeared to be online. We plugged into the first open tower, yet despite futzing with the connector a few minutes, the charging session wouldn't start. I reached over to grab the cable from the adjacent charger to try that. No dice.
quote:
After waiting on hold for about 10 minutes, I finally got an agent on the line and explained the issue. She told me that the Harris Ranch chargers were "tagged for maintenance" and apologized for the trouble. She tried a reset, but the four broken towers were unresponsive. My best bet, she said, would be to turn tail and double back 45 minutes and 30 miles to Kettlemen City, where the chargers were online.
quote:
Nearly two agonizing hours later, I was finally able to get our Ford plugged in and charging at the absurdly low rate of just 33 kW. It was now almost 8 p.m., and our midnight arrival now looked more like 2 a.m.
After nearly an hour on the charger and without much to show for it—64 percent state of charge and just 182 miles of range—we cut our losses and planned on stopping again at another Electrify America station the route planner added for us, 100 miles up the road. Once there, we charger surfed to find a working one (the first 350-kW tower we plugged into was barely pushing 40 kW) and watched our estimated arrival time creep up to past 3 a.m.
We were tired and angry. Angry at the situation. Angry at Electrify America for being so historically and uniquely awful at its one job. Angry at the Ford Nav system for sending us to a charging station that, given available data, it could have known was, at best, a huge gamble on a holiday weekend.

I don't know why anybody tries any sort of road trips in an EV these days unless it's in a Tesla. Not really sure why Elon is opening up a majority of the Tesla chargers to other auto makers in 2024 and seemingly getting nothing in return. As a Tesla owner that does a lot of road trips myself, selfishly I don't want my wait times to go up.

EVs are garbage outside of a city work commute or running errands
At best to make a road trip tolerable it takes meticulous planning to be near chargers when needed and still adds time to the trip even with fast chargers.
At worst in an emergency it’s a complete nightmare. Gas stations are abundant and take 5 min to fill up

Imagine getting an electric vehicle... and it being a Ford

Should've driven his EV to the airport. I'm a big fan of EVs but a 600 mile road trip with a vehicle that doesn't have an extensive charging network isn't very responsible. You need to know their limitations.

It's mind boggling that EV's not being efficient is surprising to people.

EV’s are good for city commutes , NOT road trips

None of this is really an issue with Teslas.
Tesla superchargers are great, quick and the car and trip planner makes it a breeze.
The problem is all the other carmakers trying to (or being forced to) play catchup and then ignoring everything Teslas done.
Tesla allowing other cars to use their chargers and all standardizing to the same plug will go a long way.

EVs arent gonna be ready for long road trips for 10-20 years. Not sure why people keep pointing out the issues that everyone knows already exists.

Stay off highways and towing with evs and they will be fine.

Is 70% the most ideal charge? Elon had a good explanation on charging on his last JRE.

Doesn’t Bill Gates or someone who preaches environmentalism have a few billion dollars he/they could dedicate to dotting the countryside with free charging outlets?
Seems like that sort of thing would be a simple way of walking the talk.

Tesla will lose market share as more manufacturers get ramped up. They have the most stable, consistent, and available charging network. They are in a good position to be the de facto charging network if they want to be 1.
It won't be every charging station open to other autos. My guess they'll focus mostly on interstate travel and ask m still give preference to their own autos inside major metro.
As far as the primary article goes, yeah, it's hard to imagine any non tesla wanting to take a road trip without being able to anticipate headaches from the less reliable charging networks. Will get better over time.

They didn’t have another vehicle. Family with one vehicle. Obviously they have some money to blow on a lighting. Hell im thinking about getting an EV but I know it won’t be used for much more than town and quick weekend trips.

I just have no concept of that entire saga
Calling someone to reset chargers, being routed and mapped to various places by some company I've never heard of
It's like a totally different EV subculture I'm blissfully ignorant of

Get an EV for your commute and short local drives. Charge at home.
Take the family ICE vehicle on the road trips.
This is the best way for sensible adoption.

The people who jump on buying this junk are usually new money rednecks. They also gladly pay $100k for a Bronco.

Can you imagine the sucker that not only bought a Ford, but a Ford Truck EV.

I don’t know what the cost to the operator is, but the electric rates they charge at these stations makes my friend’s Model 3 cost more to drive per mile as my 3.5L ecoboost f150.
I’d imagine selling electricity to people who need it is decent business.

So my question is this. Could Elon be looking ahead to avoid a lawsuit by Gov? If he owns 98% of chargers would they assume its a monopoly since others can’t use it? If he opens it up then that worry goes away.
Just thinking about his motives here.
Someting else, Elon opened as a battery fueled company. Ford and others opened as a gas fueled company. I’ll never buy electric but it would be Tesla if forced.
I admire Elon for doing this as entrepenuer, i despise the rest as its forced by Gov. Big difference. Elon let market decide to buy his cars. The rest have to meet a quota.
