Has anyone here ever worked in a steel plant?

I’ve always had a fascination with shorting out to melt large amounts of scrap steel.
Looks like a giant arc welder.

I used to, but I quit after this annoying, punk kid wouldn't STFU about playing football for Notre Dame.

Did an internship in a steel mill. EAF is incredibly loud. Half melted chunks frequently explode out as gas expands.
Continuous casting is impressive and about the hottest part you're allowed to be around. On the mill side, when #3 rebar misses a roller stand you get red hot steel sphagetti coming out at like 3000 feet per minute (don't quote me on that speed, it's plenty fast enough to royally f things up).
Make sure you're not like Bart Simpson and accidentally choose a gay steel mill.

Visited a steel mill a month or 2 ago. The kettle holds 90tons of scrap and melts it in about 20mins using arc furnace. That 20mins would run your house for a year. They do like 2 kettles an hour. Around the clock basically.

I got a job in a steel mill, shucking steel like a slave.
Five long years, every Friday I come straight back home with all my pay.
Have you ever been mistreated? Then you know just what I'm talking about.
I worked five long years for one woman, she had the nerve to put me out.

We do a fair amount of contract work and industry association work for them. I wind up in a mill a few times per year at least. I love them but it's a different culture in there.

I did 12 years with Nucor Steel. Hard, hot work, but it pays well.

I have work in steel plants for about the past 12 years. The first several were at finish plants where we ordered steel. I currently work at a plant with a blast furnace in Alabama

Yes, but I left that job to play Russian roulette in the back of a Cambodian brothel.

Company I work for has foundries in the US, Mexico, China and Poland. I got a tour of our foundry in Pennsylvania while at the corporate campus, was lucky enough to be there when they were pouring.

The old ipsco plant?
I got to tour that plant when I was buying a ton of plate steel for the company I worked for. Was cool to see them melt the scrap and see the final product rolled out.
