You bet Sears is kicking themselves that they did not change with technology. They were the kings of order and pickup, just needed to add delivery services.
They had everything in line to do it. They were Amazon 100+ years before Amazon was ever thought of. They had their own manufacturing (and good relationships with other manufacturers), their own warehouses, their own freight yards, and they had the distribution. You could buy a damn house from them through the mail. Amazon vs Sears should be studied by everyone in the business world.
Sears lacked modern vision and the desire to hire anyone with that vision. By the time they made a feeble attempt at developing an online presence it was too late, and that effort was half assed at best.

Hopefully Bezos hired him, because the student was correct. If all Bezos was going to do was keep selling books Amazon had no future. In 1997, Amazon was just a bookseller and would have been destroyed once the established booksellers got more established online, if it had no other lines of business.
It was not until the next year, 1998, that Amazon would move outside of books to retailing other items online. It still wouldn't turn a profit until the end of 2001, but after that it's been a world beater.

It's pretty cool to see your order number history. I made 1 purchase in 2009 and then again in 2010. Has exploded each year after.
113 orders this year.

Had a girl that worked summers in Alaska, worked at Amazon in the rest of the year. 1997-1998. Never had heard of Amazon, they just sold books at the time.
Always wonder how she is now, since she was in on the ground floor 25 years ago.

Yeah, I don't think not picking out the lone unicorn that hadn't grown its horn out of a herd of 10,000 running horses says much about one's business acumen.

Pat Dye said it was 50/50. I tend to agree.

Bezos did a few things early on to set Amazon apart. I started using the website in 98 or 99 and even back then it was pretty easy to find stuff and make the purchase. That has gotten even easier.
Adding in the Prime option accelerated sales a ton I'm sure.

Or if he’s Jewish, the administration would allow the muzzies to keep him from going to class.

IN their defense, at that time Amazon was only selling books and losing shite tons of money.
Bezos expanded and the rest is history.
i know this will be very random and out of left field...
but there's a dumb movie called "friends with benefits" with Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis. Timberlake is a marketing/advertising guy and at the end of the film he's being poached to another company. The head hunter says "i can't say who it is, but they're the largest online retailer of books"
such a weird snapshot of time just 10 years ago where that's all they were known for.

He ducked out with $30 million in stock options. He should have stayed and he would be a billionaire.
What's that stock worth today? Not in the billions, obviously, but I'm sure it's pretty sweet.
