Hopefully Bezos hired him, because the student was correct. If all Bezos was going to do was keep selling books Amazon had no future. In 1997, Amazon was just a bookseller and would have been destroyed once the established booksellers got more established online, if it had no other lines of business.
It was not until the next year, 1998, that Amazon would move outside of books to retailing other items online. It still wouldn't turn a profit until the end of 2001, but after that it's been a world beater.
