Are crappy public high schools more lawless these days?

Or is that just perception? I went to a shitty public school and people were always scrapping and teachers were always breaking up fights. But none of the fights were recorded, because none of us were walking around school all day with big arse camcorders.
Nowadays the video of every other fight ends up on social media and mom group texts within 24 hours.
I don't know how much better and less lawless crappy public schools were 20 or 30 or 40 years ago, or if they were better at all. You just never saw video evidence of how crappy and lawless they were.

Went to an average high school and there were fights all the time “I’ll meet you at the tree!”. Heard they cut that tree down after we graduated.
But to answer your question I have no idea if there are more or less now vs. then.

I've taught in various high schools for the last 20 years, and in the first 17 years, I saw two fights total. When we came back from Covid, I'd see one a week. Now we're down to 1 a month.

I went to a public HS in the middle of Missouri. There were some fights, the normal greasers smoking cigarettes in the restrooms, some guys drinking alcohol out of DrPepper cans all day and some guys tripping on shroooms or dropping acid in class. Back in the early 90s.
But we all got a quality education and no one harassed the faculty.
Our idea of a good weekend was to go to the river or someone's cattle pasture, build a bonfire and drink. Maybe some attempts at cow tipping afterward.

I currently go to a large public high school. Yes. Its very crazy. There are fights all the time and the school sucks. Its I'm sure less crazy but still alot happens. (ascension schools are supposed to be good too I thought)

I went to a small town louisiana public. There was the occasional fight but it wasnt anything major. I work at a large metro public school (1600 students) now. I know its not a 1 to 1 comparison but this shite is nuts. Shits gotten so much worse since covid. Kids dont care about anything. Grades, respecting adults, following rules, none of it. Our district admin unfortunately doesnt value enforcing punishments so small things go unchecked until it grows into big things.

It’s a fair point. I vividly remember all out brawls sparking other brawls.
Now my kids go to that same high school and the overall behavior has gotten better not worse. I know overall, the public schools in Louisiana are shite. But there are some decent ones, although almost exclusively in very small towns.

I have a Jr at a local High School in a north east DFW suburb, the average home price in the area is $450,000.00.
The school is the wild wild west, freaking kids are out of control.
And there's 3500+ of them

Kids will always misbehave, do stupid stuff and vent emotions or aggression. It's simply biological. Their brains have not fully developed yet and their bodies are raging with developmental hormones. That's why we call them kids and not smaller adults.
What has changed in the modern environment is the authoritative controls on this. In the past parents and teachers acted firmly (and collectively) in response to this. Now teachers are either afraid to get involved, or worse, chose the wrong side based on some misguided political allegiances. And the parents went from "hold my kid at the principals office because I'm coming down there to put his head through a wall" to "how dare you punish my child, this is everyone else's fault".

I remember there being fights at the private school I went to. The private school had a pretty bad crowd because of all the plant baw children who got kicked out of public schools ended up at the private.

Middle School I went to was pretty wild, fights at least 2-3 days a week. Calmed down some when I got to H.S.

I have friends who have kids in public school and it just depends on the school.
A lot of it is blown out of proportion by the private $chool backer$
There are plusses and minuses to both.

I went to South Carolina public schools in the late 70's, had alot of race issues. I remember a riot (when I was still in middle school across the way) where multiple people were stabbed. We counted 53 cop cars that showed up.
As for now, I guess it just depends on where you live. Here in my suburban/rural Va county, don't hear about too many issues. My boys got through unscathed although the younger one is scrappy but left it on the football field. On the other hand, we are a top 100 by income county in the country, so we don't have the "low income" trash around here stirring up things.

My two nieces are at Acadiana high, and they said there are fights every day. Most are in the bathrooms. So much so, that the boys are banned from the bathrooms during the day. They showed my 4 fights from one day, all were in the bathroom, half of which were a lot of culcha jumping a pasty kid.

I think it’s worse as far as teachers getting attacked. There was always plenty of violence but I can’t recall any teachers getting physically attacked. Of course back then were no devices that could be taken from students that seem to provoke a lot of the behavior today.
