I said this yesterday, before Michigan and FSU won, and got downvoted for it. But undefeated conference champions should be in. And Texas has head to head win over Alabama. I don't see how anything else makes sense.
People keep mentioning "chaos". There is no chaos. Three undefeated conference champs. That seems definitive. Two one loss conference champs, but one beat the other.
It seems super easy to pick the teams. If GA had won, Texas would have been out.

I hate the SEC being out but they don’t have skins on the wall this year.
Losing the two games against the best around the country loses that argument on who is best this year.
And as far as one loss teams , don’t forget OSU. I mean they lost a good fight with UM. I don’t think they are better than the BAMA or Georgia necessarily but when people talk about teams that are missing out after a good year and are capable. No one would be surprised to see them win a playoff game against this competition.

Two of the four don't belong there (Washington and FSU) and three much better one loss teams (Ohio State, Georgia and Bama) are excluded.

This is how it should be
There are 4 slots for 7 teams. First you take the undefeated P5 schools. Say what you want but they made it through the entire season unscathed and deserve recognition for such. If this is about the body of work then they proved they belong.
That leaves 4 teams vying for one spot.
Bama
Georgia
Texas
Ohio St
First we can eliminate the one that didn't even make their conference championship leaving us

Based on the season results this is also easy to separate
Texas > Bama > Georgia
Leaving us with the top 4

Defense should matter. If they screw FSU they are doing it because of the QB Situation. But why doesn’t a dominant defense matter ? If the other team can’t score you win. Gonna be controversial no matter what

Not the current best 4 teams but the 4 current most “deserving” teams.
