Invested $100k in a startup with an MBA buddy who had already flipped 2 other companies. Premise of the company was to provide quicker service to broken town truckers to get them on the road, connect them with local mechanic, provide financing if necessary to get them going ASAP. It is a great idea but they spent way too much on advertising early and ran out of runway. The company is floundering and I doubt I'll see any return. I typically invest heavy in 1-2 startups per year and luckily will likely offset it with another that is performing well.

LINK NLSP
NLS Therapeutics.

So far I’m in for 190 shares at an avg $3.40 and the stock tanked below NASDAQ minimum and fell to ~$0.22.

It’s slowly been trying to fight back, currently sitting at around $0.56.

Fingers crossed that some medical breakthrough in sleep disorders or other nerve diseases and it’ll rocket ship.

I could lose every cent and I’m already taking it as a learning experience.

MNKD- biotech company that developed an inhalable insulin drug. The studies looked great, but the company was completely mismanaged so I got out losing around 6-7k. Good lesson I learned that no matter how good a product is, the company itself may be shite.

My worst investment financially is also my best investment - about 45k maybe spent doing IVF

...but ended up with some kids out of it, who are a net negative financial asset requiring increasing amounts of money while ruining furniture and contributing none

Poor financial decision, great life decision

Hex crypto. I was sold a bill of lies. Put a bit of my GME/BB winnings into it and I’m fairly sure it’s worth $0 now. I wonder if they’re still talking about it on the discord

Colonial Bank way back during the banking crisis in 2008. I thought they were safe. Overnight the feds gave them over to BBT leaving the shareholders nothing. Still hurts.

I put $10,000 into a brewery start up. Thought who could lose money selling beer? The group got tied up in a long legal fight with a lawyer who lived next to the building they bought for brewing. They won but cost them 18 months and another local brewery opened first. Then the owner bought a Prius as the company car to show how “green” they were and spent most of the first year doing an “eco friendly business” certification through Harvard while the company bled money. I knew I was fricked then. Finally took a “bad debt” loss on my taxes last year when the company officially dissolved. Many lessons were learned.

I also bought about $3500 of Russian stocks (mainly Gazprom and Lukoil) the day of the Ukraine invasion when they dropped 30% thinking it would be over quick and there was no way Europe would be dumb enough to triple their energy costs by not buying Russian gas. Now I can’t even sell it to take a tax write off since it’s frozen. Thanks OT war bros!
