Back from the grocery store and wife is mad. Pizza place I ordered from is apparently closed even though their online system let me order. Went back to Kroger and grabbed a frozen pizza (which she said was fine) but now an entire frozen pizza is not enough food for both of us. Also bought some flowers to take over to the host and she thinks they look terrible (in fairness the pizza box did decapitate a couple when I stopped at a red light) and asked if I got them out of a dumpster.

Told her to eat all the pizza she wants and I'll have whatever's left. About to turn on football and start drinking.

Ah good. All the girls have retired to the sun room so now I can watch the game.

I’m at home by myself. For the first time in my life I’m working on Thanksgiving. And night shift to make it worse. Wife and kids are making the rounds so I ate a grilled cheese and am watching football before I go get ready to go in.

This week has been rough. My grandmother died a few days ago, so this year I lost both my remaining grandparents. My dad’s best friend who we call “uncle” lost both his parents too. They were surrogate grandparents for my brother and I.

This was the staple of Thanksgiving for my childhood. Stay at my dad’s parents, eat lunch there. Go to my moms parents and have mid afternoon, then to my Uncles parents for dessert and football. Even though it’s been about ten years since we made those rounds, losing them all has made all those memories flood back. I’ve been on nights since the first of October, so this hasn’t been easy.

The smell of my dad’s parents house on this day is very real in my mind right now. Turkey baking, dressing cooking, macaroni, natural gas stove and oven. Macys Parade and the. John Madden and Pat Summerall on the tv in the living room. My grandfather walking in the kitchen every 5 mins because he needed a “sample.” My grandfather was fascinated with the Madden Turducken. First year dad got one and we cooked that, it became a Thanksgiving staple.

Heavy for Thanksgiving. Enjoy those moments, especially you young guys. You’ll get married, have kids, years will pass and you’ll remember those moments from the past on these days.
