The problem with pet insurance is (1) as it's been said it's a reimbursement process and (2) it only covers the big things. So unless you actually have that $1500 bill, you're pouring money into a pit you hope you never need. Pet insurance is like homeowner's insurance in lots of ways.

This- I looked in to it again after I had a $600 bill for an exam and meds, but it's $75/month and it doesn't cover any routine maintenance. I'll just take my chances

No necessarily. Most companies dont cover "wellness" but some do. Most will cover allergy treatments, OA, and various other frequent treated issues, but only if isnt a pre-existing condition prior to getting the insurance.

Realistically its best for owners with breeds prone to major issues though

It’s definitely one of those things you say you don’t need until you do and you wish you had it. I had it for my dog when he was young but got rid of it because it didn’t cover vet visits, shots, etc and it was like $45 a month IIRC.

Fast forward a couple years and now the dog needs a $3000 surgery plus weekly follow up appointments for 8 weeks. Like $5k all in. Guess who’s not getting the surgery now.

People hound me over not getting the surgery all the time. I just ask them to pay for the surgery and I’ll do it. If I had pet insurance that could reimburse for part or even all of it, it would be a no brainer. And no, they don’t cover preexisting conditions lol
