I understand why you’d want to try and find an advantage against Ohio State or Penn State, but do you really need to fund that for Rutgers or Northwestern? You’re Michigan, after all.

Well, they were coming off a two win season, one of those wins being a 3OT effort against Rutgers. Probably made them a little nervous.

It never hurts to practice the entire process against the little guys, so it will work to perfection in the big games.
Also, if they were going to get the maximum benefit from the stolen signs, then their preparation and in-game management throughout the season remain consistent.
