After charting #LSU’s defense against Ole Miss, it actually is worse than I thought it would be watching live.
I charted all plays of ten or more yards and touchdowns
Here’s my break down of all the issues:
Missed tackles: 14
Bad pursuit angles: 4
Loafing: 13
DL stance/alignment: stopped counting at 8. It was essentially every play.
Soft zone coverages giving up easy catches: 5
DL blown up by OL: 4
LBs stuck on blocks: 6
Scheme issues: 3
LB bad coverage: 4
DB bad/blown coverage: 3
Too much time to pass: 1
Outside Run contain: 3
I’ll elaborate a few examples at the end.
As far as the biggest culprits… well there were a lot.
Greg Penn had the most with ten negative plays, but that has a lot to do with his position being around the ball the most.
Greg Penn: 10
Andre Sam: 9
Saivion Jones: 7
Sage Ryan: 6
Major Burns: 6
Omar Speights: 3
Latterance Welch: 3
Maason Smith: 2
Denver Harris: 2
Mehki Wingo: 2
Paris Shand: 2
Jacobian Guillory: 2
Whit Weeks: 2
Ovie Oghoufo: 2
Zy Alexander: 1
Harold Perkins: 1
Ashton Stamps: 1
As you can see that’s a lot of players committing a lot of different mistake.
The two issues that should bother you the most are missed tackles and loafing. Brian Kelly said in all LSU had 34 missed tackles which gave up an extra 284 yards.
And as for loading around? To see that many players not hustling to get to the ball on plays where your team just got gashed? That speaks volumes. Football is a weird sport. Things happen you don’t expect. Even if you can’t make the play, you should always run to the ball in case chaos occurs. Any coach will tell you this.
As far as the overall coaching play call selection I noticed many of Kiffin’s plays were perfectly designed to take advantage of what LSU had called. A lot of crossing routes and zones flooded. I think the play calling needed to mix in a good bit more man coverage.
There were also plays where no matter what the defenders did there was no way to make the play because of the defense that was called. On one play the defense was over stacked to the wide side. So Ole Miss put four blockers on the short side of the field to block LSU’s two defenders on that side of the box. I’ll let you guess what happens next.
So is it coaching or talent? Well, I think there’s definitely enough talent to be average. However average is a loooong way away from this defense that ranks 117th in the country. So I’d say it’s both - coaching and talent.
Scheme is an issue, but I think technique and fundamentals are the bigger issue. If this team just tackled well, that by itself wins the game for LSU, and it’s probably not a close game.

How many times do we line up incorrectly, do guys play the wrong coverage, do LBs take the wrong gaps?
These are all played mistakes that coaching can correct. I’m guessing there’s a lot of that too.

Felt like every play our DB’s were in a soft coverage. Even backing off 10 yards when OM only needed 5 yards.
Interesting stats and I like the break down. Preston usually has some solid posts on Twitter.

I am fairly football illiterate but our D is poo poo

This is the best way I can sum up our defense without wanting to just cry

Season is half over and these problems aren't close to being fixed. They aren't getting fixed.

Monday or Tuesday, Jai Eugene was on Jordys show. He repeated over and over that no one on defense is playing with Pride or an attitude to dominate….just going through the motions.
House has some scheme and personnel issues but the players have to adjust their attitude and start making plays. You can be in position but it’s time to step up and the make play. Perfect example is WRs vs FSU or JD throwing deep ball…lots of drops, since then they’ve been making the plays and the offense has taken off.

Loafing is obvious. It is how they practice it is how they prepare. All these things lead to what we see
These defensive guys think that they put on an LSU uniform and it makes them ready for the NFL.
Kids, it just starts when you get the jersey. There are multiple players playing their way out of a football future. It is cultural. We have enough leaders on offense to overcome. Maybe Denbrock is coaching them like college players. House may be thinking they are pros. But something must change. Play the guys that give effort.

The crazy thing is the offense is the exact opposite of this. It’s like there are two different mindsets on this team and maybe it’s the continuity of the coaches on the offensive side of the ball

Penn really really hurt us this past week. Also, the four guys listed at the top of this list are a major reason why our defense has struggled so much thus far. Coaching sure hasn’t helped them either with their decision making.

The defense as a whole is bad right now. With how bad the team looked in terms of effort and execution makes it impossible to not put it both on scheme/Coaches and the players.
There were 3 total plays out of the 88 where we called a a good defense against what Ole Miss wants to run. Most the time our alignment and positioning was setup in a way for Ole Miss to do whatever they wanted.
1. The 3rd down on Ole Miss second drive where Burns came free and got a hand on the ball.
2. The 4th and 2 where we called an all out blitz (Cover 0) got pressure, knocked the ball down and got a stop.
3. There was a redzone possession where we actually correctly called a Cover 4 out of a man look where Lane Kiffin called mesh expecting man like we had done before but this time against Cover 4 it took away the mesh and Dart threw a 50/50 ball where Zy knocked the ball down. That was schemed very well and got us a key stop on 3rd down to force the field goal.

Our defense desperately lacking a high energy coach.

Guys like Maason Smith should be benched and go back to being part time players. It’s time to throw young guys in and just figure it out. At least they want to play

Loafing
Of all the things listed, this one is most disturbing

quote:I say it as a joke, but play the new kids that have not been infected by the culture that has screwed our older guys. Watch the young ones like Weeks, they play with a speed and intensity that you dont see out of the rest. Womack in limited duty does too. Jefferson does. Wingo is not the same player as last year intensity wise.

Lack of containment is a real issue. Same issue the 2013 defense had. The ends love to crash in and let guys get outside easily.
