What I would change about the defense

After spending way too much time watching breakdowns and replays of our games this season, I have come up some simple personnel adjustments I would make to help the defense. Many may not agree. This is ignoring the obvious change of tackling and pursuit drills until everyone pukes everyday.

1) Move Harold Perkins back inside. I may catch heat for this, but House and Kelly were right to move him to ILB. I didn’t like the way they utilized him vs FSU but moving him completely outside was an overreaction IMO. We still need him on the edge situationally, but he needs to be primarily in the middle. I’m going to show you two plays, a few weeks apart. This is the same exact play: GH counter. Both times it was correctly identified and filled by the LB, with very different results. I’ll let you figure out what’s different.

2) Less Saivion Jones at edge, more Maason Smith. Saivion Jones has been repeatedly victimized as the primary edge defender. Many people have called for Womack here, and on passing downs I would agree, but I want to see Maason smith outside. Smith has been double teamed and basically washed out of almost every play inside. Move him outside, get him some space, and run some twists, stunts, and scrapes with the LB over his outside to steal gaps in the run game.

3) Less Oghufo, more Swinson and Womack. I don’t know why Swinson disappeared. I thought he was far and away better than Oghufo. He and Womack should be the only guys getting snaps at Jack, with Perk subbing in here situationally.

4) Weeks over Speights. Shouldn’t have to explain this one. I think most of TD would agree.

5) Duce Chestnut back in the game. He was hated on early in the season and I get it. He’s undersized and struggles in man against bigger WRs. But he plays well downhill and most importantly he fricking tackles. I’d rather a guy give up a catch and make a tackle than a guy give up a catch and completely whiff giving them 30 more yards.

This obviously doesn’t solve everything, but it stops some of the bleeding. We don’t need to be elite defensively, and obviously we won’t be, but we absolutely can be better. It starts this weekend.

Meh like it all except keep Perkins on the edge. He’s not great at shedding blocks. Let him plays in space

agreed. our edge rushers used to be guys that look like they can play at WR and not see a huge difference in size/speed.

the middle of our d-line needs an anchor. we had that w/ Shelvin, and the kid from Utah who transferred out.

I’d like to see Chesnut play Nickle. He can tackle and is extremely instinctive. We straight up just have our personnel all outta whack at times

100% with the moves. But, the secondary schemes might be too intricate for this group at this time. Simplify the coverages and let's see.

Disagree. That clip you posted of him was one of the only good plays he made there. He had the worst grade of any of the defense that week according to PFF. I really think he’s more of a better Kwon Alexander than a Devin White.

I could live with this but I’d much rather Weeks over Penn at this point. He missed a ton of tackles and he’s very slow sideline to sideline.

Duce Chestnut back in the game.

I don’t think it’s a bad idea to try, but I think Toviano should get some looks as well.

Everything else I agree with.

4 man DLINE with new DEs and I don't care who. Somebody has to be able to pressure the QB from the outside. Perkins and Weeks blitzing from the inside more often than not and mix it up. Line Perkins and Weeks on the los with the 4 Dlinemen and make he OL have to decide who is going to rush and who is going drop out. Presently, our 3 Dlinemen line up the same way 95% of all plays and fool nobody. We need to start fooling some people since we can't manhandle them.

Jefferson needs to start and play as much as possible. Perkins needs to be used like he was last season. Spy the qb with delayed blitzes as lanes open up. Also can't telegraph when and where he is coming from. He shouldnt be going head to head with OLs. Make the OL account for him without letting them know when and where he is going to be coming from.

Get a defensive coordinator that actually knows what he's doing, that would be the most important one.

Dude is flat out awful in coverage against sec wideouts man he doesn’t have the athleticism to cover ppl in this league. Yes he’s a sound tackler but he would exclusively have to play zone
