You are taking shite out of context. Any defender has "reads" or "keys" and you "read" a play.

His read is not to determine which gap his defenders are in. He was given a gap to attack. Just as Swinson was

Nice work Not Cooper. Hopefully some of the "Rant" bro's are learning. I agree with what Kelly said and average or good defenses and offenses can only become great when every player does his job.

This is the big thing that happens when QBs can extend plays. It's hard to keep guys covered for long periods of time; what people don't seem to realize is that these plays are timed and somewhat predictable, and when a QB scrambles everyone is improvising to get open, cover people, block people, etc. That's why people end up open.

I think this is mainly what Kelly was referring to in that quote. He may have had a couple DL plays in mind, but I think he was mainly thinking about LBs and DBs in coverage who, when KJ got out of the pocket and started moving vertically, crashed down to come tackle him, and left their zones, men, etc…and someone wound up being wide open.

It was almost like they forgot KJ was still behind the LOS and could still pass, and they were only thinking of him as a runner in that moment.

Which is partly a big credit to KJ. He’s a big, strong bastard who can bounce off tackles, and is just fast and elusive enough to extend plays that way too. He’s a calm QB who’s played a lot of SEC football and was able to move vertically along the LOS just long enough for our coverages to break down a handful of times for some huge plays. Have to credit his TE and WRs on those plays too for recognizing it, breaking off their original routes, and either sitting in the unmanned zone or taking off on a “go” where he could find them.

And KJ also appeared more of an outside running threat when things broke down to where our LBs and DBs had to respect that part of his game and wound up being tempted to leave their assignment and do “somebody else’s job.” More than he did against BYU anyway and probably more than he did on any film our guys may have watched.

No excuse, but like you later said, “those 4-5 ‘almost’ sacks may well have been the difference between 34-31 and 48-17.” The positive thing is it gives the coaches something to teach and work on after a close win.
Don’t want to have to lose to get their attention, and they may not be as willing to listen after a blowout win.

I saw this play develop from the north end zone. I thought it was a great stunt to give Perkins a free sprint to the QB.
It worked beautifully but we lost containment in the middle. The DL slanted left, so not sure if Swinson or Smith was responsible for that lane.
I agree with OP. Good call and hope to see it again.

Coach O would have never allowed the program to crumble like BK did.

Oh wait…

Swinson's initial job is to crash inside to take the LT with him to allow a free lane for Perkins to come around. I think we can ALL agree with that.

Unfortunately that does not appear to be the case. There seem to be a few folks who have decided to die on this hill.

The OP sees the play as Swinson continuing to (erroneously) work upfield. I see a guy (Swinson) who is taking his guy (LT) inside and creating the lane for Perkins...until the LT turns Swinson and blows him outside into Perkins.

I’m kind of with you on this. I think it’s hard to say for sure whether Swinson made a mental mistake or just got turned by the LT. Could easily be a combination of both TBH.

As an aside - if Swinson stays inside on that play, KJ might not have room to step up even if Perkins doesn’t make the sack cleanly.

I was looking for someone to talk about Gap control. In a pass rush/stunt/blitz gap integrity is the number one talking point technique wise. That’s why Swinson messed up and not Perkins.

Yep. The one where Alexander lost his receiver when KJ got outside is another example of that. Our end crashed on inside angle and ran into Wengo who was providing inside pressure. KJ jumps outside and boom no outside containment. If the end simply takes and outside angle he or Wengo gets the sack. Have seen this too many times but fortunately it is fixable.

So far it appears to be the case. Still recovering I guess.

Why do they blow assignments so frequently?

I honestly think guys are just trying to make a big play and get off the field. Most of these seem to happen on 3rd down. It may be a leftover symptom of Jordan Travis sitting back unpressured and picking the secondary apart in the 2nd half vs FSU. Guys may be pressing to try not to let that happen. Also, defense is tough, especially working in so many new guys.

Swinson - transfer
Smith - DNP last year
Perkins was basically just an edge rusher and spy
Womack - Freshman
Weeks - Freshman
Sam - transfer
Alexander - transfer
Chestnut - transfer
Harris - transfer

Some of this stuff is just chemistry/familiarity between players. Some of it is that simple, some of it isn’t

I think BK was referring to the DB that left the TE for any easy score. KJ was scrambling but still behind the line of scrimmage. Don’t leave your man until the quarterback crosses the line of scrimmage. Let your teammates try to handle the quarterback while you still do your job which was covering the TE.

That may be, but I expect a team better prepared than what I have seen thus far.

That’s good analysis. Gives us hope that we can fix the big plays on defense and start getting off the field!
