And specifically in 2023, the whole defense is basically new players. A bunch of them not even with the program last year. I understand big boy CFB is cut throat but they deserve a little bit of grace here

Like I said, I am not anti Kelly and like a ton of what he has done for this program in a short time. Its just frustrating watching the defense struggle.

adjust to your personnel and call more man.

That’s the problem. We have been consistently roasted in man. We are trying to play more zone but the front 4 is struggling to pressure/contain and the secondary is not passing off routes well, which leads to coverage breakdowns.

Most of our coverage breakdowns in zone are between linebackers and safeties, and that’s no coincidence considering we’ve changed our both linebackers and lost our best nickel. Yes, Zy got lost on a long TD that really should’ve been a sack. It was frustrating but pretty clear that he and the safety were not on the same page. I don’t think inserting yet another new player solves some of those issues

And zone is working great

It’s not. But we don’t have good enough cover guys to handle the elite WRs.

It shouldn’t take years to figure that common sense shite out. Geez these guys get paid millions to be that boneheaded.

You play your best players regardless of seniority

I think it's clear Bk values experience over pure talent. last year perkins sat on the bench way too much IMO and I feel the same about Womack and Jackson. I wish they would just run some man, thow some different guys out there at db and see if anyone flashes.

It’s easy. We need to fire Kelly and bring Miles back (if anyone can find him).

He's probably best in man to man coverage and we run a frick ton of zone.

Exactly, We have been playing zone until a team reaches the red zone on us and then we switch to man coverage.

Our guys are getting killed playing zone. Florida state could get a first down anytime they wanted when we played in the zone.

Young players grow up playing man coverage all in high school, they go to these elite 7-7 camps where all they do is play MAN COVERAGE . Play MAN , if we get beat, we get beat.

Whether he believes it or not, he was talking about playing Freshman in his interview with Finebaum today.

Because house is a bend to my will and follow my scheme rather than scheme to his players strengths.

You do realize position coaches grade practice film and game film and play the guys that grade out the highest. It’s not like they just eyeball it and so slight guess work. Who plays in the game is based off who graded the best at practice and in previous games. Obviously different coaches will grade different skills as more important or less important but in general they aren’t just throwing a guy out there because they think he’s better just because they think it.

I'm certainly not "the coach is an idiot" guy but if you have two guys at corner who are really good at man, and you've been dogshite running zone with the guys you got out there..........well...........adjust to your personnel and call more man.

A little something to consider for those who keep pounding the man coverage drum as if it’s a magic wand and will have no effect on anything else.

Do you want Perkins split out covering backs or TEs instead of staying closer to the LOS? Then by all means, let’s play more man! I know we are going to play it some, but zone played well is ideal when facing mobile QBs. It also keeps Perkins playing in areas where it’s much easier for him to zone blitz, spy, and affect the QB. They just need to execute it better.

I’ll give you that this year’s secondary is coming around a LOT slower than last year’s. That said, last year’s group also had their struggles early, but eventually improved as they learned the scheme. Hopefully this week and next will be a turning point for our defense.

While I agree with you, coaches aren’t perfect and do sometimes get it wrong. An example is Whit Weeks sitting on the bench and he now plays like our best linebacker. Mistakes do happen.

It would be a bad look to attract transfers, just to have them sit behind freshmen/soph players.

It would be a worse look to lose ballgames by playing to potential future players and the optics that it would put out to them. “Even if you suck and suck constantly, we won’t sit you down.”
